Nancy Pelosi's 'Transparency' Comments Make Mosque Issue Even More Divisive

Speaker Nancy Pelosi attempted a clever rhetorical maneuver Wednesday morning, saying she supports "transparency" concerning how the controversial mosque planned near Ground Zero is being funded, but also wants "similar openness" from groups opposing the mosque.

This is disingenuous for a variety of reasons. First, the implication is that this is a manufactured issue being "ginned up" by conservative groups, as opposed to a legitimate, organic concern. In fact, the vast majority of Americans -- regardless of political ideology -- oppose the mosque.

Moreover, the most prominent group opposing the mosque is The Anti-Defamation League -- hardly a conservative group.

But it doesn't end there. Pelosi's comments also ignore the fact that it was President Obama who really propelled this debate into the national consciousness in the first place -- and that even Majority Leader Harry Reid -- hardly a conservative -- also opposes the mosque.

The truth is that most of the questioning regarding the funding of the mosque construction, as well as with the "wisdom" of the mosque itself (with a few minor exceptions), has come -- not from organizations -- but rather from politicians, reporters, bloggers, and commentators.

Is Nancy Pelosi suggesting we look into their funding, as well?

As HotAir's Ed Morrissey noted, "What better way to defend the First Amendment freedom of religion than to have the Speaker of the House ask the federal government investigate those exercising their First Amendment right to free speech?"

By implying that anyone interested in discovering who's behind the funding of the mosque has a hidden political agenda, Pelosi hopes to turn this into a typical left vs. right political debate. She is hoping to make the two sides morally equivalent, a move that requires moxie considering some of the funding for the mosque may reportedly come from the Middle East.

By suggesting that anyone interested in how the mosque construction is being funded should have their finances probed, as well, Pelosi has ensured this debate will become even more divisive than it already was. And that is a surprising accomplishment!

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I really don't think that the author understands what Pelosi was saying. Look at all of the funding, give Americans the real facts (i.e. it is a community center and not a Mosque, it is not being built at Ground Zero, etc.) and then let the local people make the decision. All of this is really sad. There are a lot of people in this country who look like bigots behind this. Stop comparing yourselves to countries who don't value religious freedoms! I don't care if I can't have a Christian church in a muslim country. I don't live in a muslim country. I live in the U.S. and I expect and respect all peaceful religions. And please don't start the ridiculous arguement about Muslims being more violent than Christians or Jews or Hindus or anyone else. Every religion has zealots who justify violence and hatred with their twisting of religious words. Wasn't it American Southern Christians who used the words in the bible to justify the hatred, killing and biogtry or slavery?

I agree ,It will be very difficult to find a contractor for this project. Contrary to what President Obama said about the United States is "No Longer A Christian Nation" , We are !

What is your definition of Red Blooded? I think that there are a lot of Americans who need work and I suspect that the majority of them will be lining up for the job.

If the mosque is allowed to be built, then what otherwise legitimate businesses will not be allowed to be built because the mosque will be labeled as a church and zoning laws restrict what can be built near churches? This issue is snowballing.

For the record, it is a community center, not a mosque. It will simply have a room for prayer in it. No zoning changes would be needed.
