Obama Gets Bad News on Unemployment, Urges Passage of Jobs Bill

Before heading off for a New England vacation Thursday, President Obama called on Senate Republicans to stop blocking a jobs bill meant to help small businesses by providing tax breaks and loans through local banks.

In brief remarks to reporters outside the White House, the president said a "partisan minority" in the Senate is standing in the way of legislation that promises $30 billion in loans to Main Street businesses. Republicans have denounced the plan as a mini-bailout. But Obama said their refusal to permit the bill to even advance to a final vote is an "obstruction that defies common sense." He said the bill "is fully paid for and will not add one single dime to our deficit."
President Obama pushes for small business jobs bill
More economic bad news came the president's way before he left the Washington for a family vacation on Martha's Vineyard, off the coast of Cape Cod, Mass. The Labor Department reported first-time claims for unemployment compensation jumped to 500,000 last week, the highest since November and up 12,000 from the previous week. Obama says 60 percent of the job losses are in the small business sector.

He said small business legislation will be the first item on the Senate calendar when it returns from a summer recess next month. "Let's put aside the partisanship for awhile and work together for small businesses, for employees, and the communities that depend on them across this great country."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. WHEN THEY MEASURE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE UN-EMPLOYED IN THIS COUNTRY THEY LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE COLLECTING UN-EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS. THERE ARE MILLIONS MORE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT COUNTED. IF YOU "GOOGLE" INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS YOU WILL FIND HUNDREDS OF PROFESSIONS SUCH AS REAL ESTATE AGENTS WHO ARE NOT WORKING BECAUSE OF THE BAD ECONOMY. THESE PEOPLE CANNOT COLLECT UN-EMPLOYMENT BECAUSE THEY ARE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS,THEREFOR THEY ARE NOT COUNTED IN THE STATISTICS. IF YOU COUNT THEM, YOU WOULD FIND MILLIOINS MORE OF PEOPLE UN-EMPLOYED AND NOT REPORTED BY OUR GOVERNMENT.

Richard yes and you have to include those working part time because they can't get full time hours and those underemployed along with the independents who can't make it . Oh and don't forget the ones who have stopped looking. This is the U6 statistic It truly is closer to 17% The REAL problem with our (this administration)government is they are disconnected from Main Street and they think we are stupid...all of us! There is NO CREDIBILITY with this administration.....and they just make it easier everyday to see how myopic ,autistic and indifferent they are to the average guy or gal. I NEVER thought I would see this happen to our country. And the worse thing.....the rest of the world is passing us by... How IS that hope and change working out for ya!!

Isn't about time for "our president" and his family to do something besides run around? He was hired to do a job and he hasn't accomplished very much so far. His "changes" are needing changed!

We are in a mess Mr.President and we do not need Public Grandstanding and a speech or a personal appearance evryday;we need someone in the WhiteHouse to answer the phone and talk to some real blue collar people. You would be amazed at what we know seeing how this country was built by our Hands! The secret weapon to all this is something that has been put away for a few decades and you will not need a vote to use it. Mr. President it is called Common Sense! SHHH, don't say it too loud as we don't want others to know we have any!

I haven't had a vacation in 6 years Mr. President. I have my own business that has been crushed by the economy. Have a nice vacation and when you get back you had better get in gear or I'm voting you out.

Liberals think spending more money is the answer to any problem.

Mr. Diemer...please start writing articles that contain more investigative reporting. You did this with the FOX News article as well. How about telling us what was in this entire bill? What are the hidden parts that Obama is not disclosing? We, the readers deserve more than a flashy headline that hopes to convince people of your own beliefs.

This administration does not have a clue. A jobs bill that requires banks to make loans. That is all good but they did not the first time around. To fix this problem put back in place the regulations that were removed in 1999. They have abused the privilege of investing on wall street when they started dealing in risky ventures. Taking banks off wall street would make them perform as they were designed to perform. Opening accounts for people and business and making loans. Force them to do their job. As for the tarp and stimulus payouts to banks should have never happened. Money should have gone to the people. People spending will heal the economy nothing else. Also Obama should have put a freeze on mortgage foreclosures as soon as he took office with a presidential order. This would have forced mortgage companies to work with home owners. Drastic times call for drastic measures. Then he should have worked on legislation to get companies to move back, taxed all imports, etc. I know he did not create the problem, but standing there blaming someone else instead of rolling up the sleeves and kicking butt is not the answer. After doing this then he could have played with his heathcare bill people would not have cared as much then.

Chuck... The people had well being before without heath insurance. My niece who I help sine mother failed at the job is 25 and now a college student thanks to me. She does not normally get sick, She also owns nothing except the car I bought her, she does not work because of school. When there is a problem she walks into th emergency room they have to treat here in Pa. as if she had insurance. They know she does not work or have insurance and they know do to Pa. laws their is not much they can do about it. In Pa the cost is out of control for heath insurance to the point that a family of three healthy people with an income of 80,000 can not afford 879.00 per month.

I remember posting several months ago that the acid test for the Presidents agenda would be the U3(the one they try to run with)unemployment statics. These numbers are not as bad as the true picture which is the U6 but at this point ...it really doesn't matter. Elections are based on pocketbooks....regardless of what some may think. Mr. President, for the good of the country....your plan is a failure. Stop and look at the big picture....if you refuse to do this....then WHAT IS IT REALLY YOU ARE DOING? One has wonder what is your plan because this is NOT GOOD for the country and soon the country will finally have something to say about it!!
