Rep. Roy Blunt, Missouri Senate Candidate, Pulls 'Ground Zero' Ad

Republican congressman Roy Blunt, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, has pulled a campaign video off the Internet that showed the smoking rubble of the World Trade Center along with audio of his Democratic opponent saying it should be up to New Yorkers to decide the location of the controversial Park 51 Islamic center.

The Democrat, Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, demanded Thursday that Blunt apologize to the families of 9/11 victims, accusing him of exploiting the tragedy for political gain, The Washington Post reported.

Blunt said he wasn't aware the video had been posted and a campaign spokesman blamed a staffer who "got carried away."

"It was up overnight and quickly replaced. It did not reflect the right tone and was quickly replaced with an image of Robin Carnahan and Barack Obama," Blunt spokesman Rich Chrismer told the Post. "Roy Blunt opposes the Ground Zero mosque and Robin Carnahan has rubberstamped Barack Obama again by refusing to oppose it."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Of all the places in NYC to construct a mosque, why NEAR THE WORLD TRADE CENTER (not meant as "yelling", but for emphasis)? That's what is incomprehensible, especially after the tragedy that happened nine years ago (in 2 weeks from tomorrow -- Saturday). No matter which way I look at it from the politicians to the citizens to the Muslim extremists that inflicted this horror (not the law-abiding Muslims), it's an outright slap in the face of the families whose loved ones were killed and re-opening the wounds that already will take a long time to heal.

I see no difference between Carnahan and Blunt- same old politics. We need new people in congress, not the self serving lot we have now!

Remember the lives of 2,976 innocent victims. What of their right or that of their families?

A point that keeps being thrown in all opposed to the Islamic Center is that we are being told that the TERRORISTS from 9/11 were "not really" Muslims or that they are "not that". No they were extremists, but still Muslims, performing Jihad against America. This is not an issue of whether or not there is a LEGAL issue, but from a standpoint of a MORAL issue. If this is truly meant as a measure of "healing", then the Imam & his supporters would be open to compromise. If not open to compromise, then it is more of the issue of politics and enablement of division. In a statement earlier this week, Daisy Khan, head of the American Society for Muslim Advancement, told The Associated Press in a brief phone interview "Dropping the plan is definitely not an option at all," She said the organizers were not considering scaling back the project or changing locations, but are consulting more closely with American Muslim leaders because they realize the uproar surrounding the center is affecting Muslims nationwide. "We know that we have the right to do this, but what is right for the larger community, or the larger good of the larger Muslim community?" she said. Here in lies the rub, the reflection here is on the “the larger good of the larger Muslim community”. But does not address the larger good of “the American People”. If we want to be and show healing and tolerance, then we need to look at what is for the Greater Good of all concerned.

I believe the Muslims have the right to build a mosque for their warship, but I believe also it would be a slap in the face to families of the victims of 9/11 to build it so close to the World Trade Center site. I think it should be left to the people who live close to the site and went through the tragedy to decide what is built in the place of the center. Maybe something to memorialize the people who died there instead of a steady reminder of the radicals from the religion who killed all of their loved ones.

here are some things most people probably don't know. If Obama is ruining America then it started long ago. George Washington welcomed the Jews to America as the "stock of Abraham" while John Adams showed the utmost respect for Islam, naming the Prophet Mohammed as one of the greatest truth seekers in history. Benjamin Franklin called him a model of compassion. The Founding Fathers read and honored the same Quran that Jones is now seeking to burn. Thomas Jefferson kept the same Quran in his personal collection and it informed his decision to host the first presidential iftaar during Ramadan. The Founding Fathers were also inspired by Christian thinkers like John Locke, who declared that the true Christian's duty was to "practice charity, meekness, and good-will in general toward all mankind, even to those that are not Christians." Keep this in mind when bashing all other faiths.

WHY DO POLITICIANS REFUSE TO STAND UNDER PRESSURE !? THIS ADD SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN PULLED! THE ONLY APOLOGIES OFFERED SHOULD BE TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO LOOK AT A MOSQUE ERECTED IN CELEBRATION OF THE CONQUEST THEY WON THAT DAY 9/11. ROY BLUNT, IF YOU APPOSE THIS MOSQUE THEN STAND UP AND FIGHT IT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! DON'T BACK DOWN !!!!

I realize that all religions have their good people and, unfortunately, some bad ones too. I would think that the powers-that-be in ANY religion would not want to put ANY members in harms way. By the Muslims selecting this particular space, they may well open the door to some whacked out people of another religion that would like to get some retribution for those lost on 9/11. Yes, this is not what any religion would sanction, but the reality that people bent on destruction and terror, regardless of religion, ARE, indeed, bent on destruction and terror. By choosing this site, the Muslims are putting their members at a needless risk. Why not just choose another site further away from "ground zero"? Or is this just their way of extending the fear, terror and destruction? Even at the cost of their own people's faith.
