Each reader should remember that a 2010 Election day is your voice to begin an immediate rewrite of this illgotten national health care plan being imposed on the elderly, the sick and the children of this USA which has very limited improvements against insurance Companies that have continued to raise rates to customers and thousands of licensed medical doctors to stop taking new patients on medicare or any State Plan. What we need in reform ist to match the insurance of all those elected members of Congress, that do not use Medicare.
September 30 2010 at 6:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUniversal Health Care or Atheistic Socialism This is an issue on which we all need to have a "well informed conscience" based on right reason rather than emotive feelings. Please bring these 4 talking points/principles into the conversation. Background If people have health care rights (which some bishops admit they do not: --Christians have a duty to care for "the least of my brothers", but this is not the same as a right of the receiver) they also have corresponding responsibilities. No one is articulating those responsibilities and the consequences of not meeting those responsibilities--- you know: not smoking, not drinking, not playing "risky ?" sports, etc... you know all the liberties with which the government has no business interfering. Pope Benedict XVI encyclical Charity in Truth is an awesome treatise on social justice. It covers these issues with depth and clarity. Ask and I will email to you a highlighted copy, it is much easier to read than: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/encyclicals/documents/hf_jp-ii_enc_06081993_veritatis-splendor_en.html . You don't know what your missing unless you read it. It is through sharing that we have the opportunity to grow. Be sure to share your observations with your elected officials: http://www.gradegov.com/ My Catholic education has taught me that the foundation of wisdom comes from keeping a priori principals in order. The word a priori means that first things must be kept first or you lose both. For example, it is an a priori statement to say that one believes in: God, family, and country. If a person puts God second in priority to family, he will lose both God and his family (God can not and will not be second to anything). If one puts one's country before his family, he will lose both his country and family (the family is the basic unit of society... as the family goes--so goes the country... John Paul II ). The Principles 1. Love/Charity Must Be of The Free Will Love is: the free will choice (not emotion) to act (not feel) for the Good of the beloved. Love must-- of necessity-- be "of the free will". (Love and charity are synonyms). A kind or gratuitous act done by compulsion of force is not love, The force (taxation) denies the free will of the actor and removes both the virtue and the blessing from the dynamic. By removing the virtue and blessing.... due to the force compelling the act... the integrity of the person has been violated (raped). Strong, but appropriate words. 2. It is a blessing and responsibility of the individual, family and church to take care of the poor, indigent and marginalized, not the government. All blessings come from God. When the individual, family and church are the "free will" source of charity then all are blessed; the giver, the receiver and the common good of the community. When the government is the source of blessings for the needy, then the government becomes the source of blessings, supplanting God, changing a blessing into a “right” (without the corresponding responsibility) of "entitlement" and making losers out of all involved by stealing the free will charity of the giver (taxation replaces charity), conditioning the receiver to demand his "right to be taken care of.. without owing anyone--even God-- a prayer of gratitude, and the community is conditioned toward atheistic socialism. The move (back) to this new “charity of the heart and soul” paradigm must be gradual, but sure, to ensure that the transition allows for the prudent care of those in need. This can best be done by: A. Allowing a 100% tax deduction for gifts to charitable organizations, and by removing the ceiling on how much can be donated--as a percentage of income while cutting back on the duration and degree of entitlements. (This is the opposite of what representatives proposed in 2009--that all charitable donations deductions be deleted from the tax code. Do you see what a Machiavellian power grab this is, do you see what an atheistic socialist and communistic power maneuver this is? And as a Catholic, who loves the Church deeply, I must tell you many Catholic religious have embraced the false notion that the government --- not the church—should be required to take care of the needy. Caritas in Veritate –Charity in Truth corrects this mis-understanding.)

August 21 2010 at 6:45 PM Report abuse Permalink +4 rate up rate down ReplyOK then what should we do? The President has always said its a "start" and it can be modified... so no one likes that now you cant be dropped from a carrier or have your pre existing condition precluded, or keep your unemployed 20 something covered in case tehy get sick or hurt? If you're serious about repeal, why is nothing mentioned about the distaerous 1 trillion pharma give away that was passed as a prescription drug plan? It cost more than Obama care, hurst seniors more, and it was provided courtesy of the bank of china... thats our alternative, along with 40 percent pemium increases and billions in fraud and abuse. The system was seriously broken before healthcare reform passed... whats the alternative?

August 21 2010 at 12:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf not this healthcare bill just how are we going to rein in our healthcare cost? If ins co. are raising their rates now what do you think their going to do onuce they convince you to take the new healthcare regulations off them It would be best to wait till new laws are in effect in 2014 then we will be in a much better position to judge just how well the new laws are achiving their goals. Personelly iam ticked at ins. providers who are raising their rates in a effort to scare america into repealing healthcare Question why do they want to get rid of the heallthcare laws to help its policy holders are to help there profit
August 21 2010 at 12:34 AM Report abuse Permalink -3 rate up rate down ReplyYou know I've had my health insurance plan since the 70's, with the same carrier. I've had three rate increases over these years. They haven't raised my rates this year either and if they do, it would be the 4th over 30 years. It's a private plan because I was self employed, I have a deductible I can handle and it includes 90% hospitalization. I've never heard that insurance carriers want to get rid of healthcare laws. What laws are you speaking of?
August 21 2010 at 4:48 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down Replyrokdoc3, thank you for an intelligent and informed post. So many buy into that liberal rant that the left presents WITHOUT checking the facts. My insurance has already increased 25%. I got my statement in the mail this week. Time will tell the rreal story/truth so here's wishing pmbalele a blissful utopia incognito. Free is not free, someone has to pay the bill but the problem is some in this country want others to pay the bill for them while they sit on their hiney's enjoying the good life.
August 21 2010 at 8:55 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyThe questionnaire about the health insurance law was badly worded or structured. First it should have asked ordinary people if they still want insurance companies continue to deny coverage pre-existing conditions? None will say they love insurance companies deny them covering pre-existing conditions. Second, ask people if they were happy insurance companies dropping them if they have prolonged illness or stay in hospital. Again none will argued the law is wrong to prohibit insurance companies to drop people if they have prolonged illness. Third, ask people if it is okay for insurance companies to drop them if they lose jobs and therefore unable to pay premiums. Again nobody will love to be dropped. The only argument the right wing and especially Fox news has is checkout from people's salaries to pay premiums or tax for insurance. However, people do not argue that they are already presently paying premium with their employers. President Obama has already explained that only those making over $250,000 would see increase in premiums. The majority like me will not see any increase. Another issue is medical rationing: The right wing is scaring people that if 35 mi uninsured Americans are added to medical services there will be medical rationing. The right wing and Fox News argue that there are not enough doctors and nurses to bring another 35 mil into clinics and hospitals. I think this argument is stupid, selfish and self -inflicting. First, whose fault we do not have enough medical staff in this rich country. I believe it's the political system during Bush and Reagan administrations. Republicans had denied grants and scholarships to many smart people who wanted to join the medical profession. This was in the name capitalism. So we have a shortage of medical staff. Look, this country is importing nurses, doctors and other medical professionals from all over the world: India, Japan, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, England, Holland, German etc. The policy at that time was that only rich people could have the college education. Second, is it not dumb and inhuman to give a reason that only the rich only should have access to medical services? How about the 35 mi? That means republicans and Fox News CEOs put themselves as better human beings than the 31 mi without insurance. Government role: I still believe it is role of government to do those functions private sector is not interested. I have never seen a millionaire wanting to expand a highway or offer free medical services to everybody. Government has role to protect its people. That is why we have police, military etc. That is why it's illegal to deny medical services to poor person in emergency situation. As President Obama has said it is very expensive to treat an individual in emergency situation. Preventive care is cheaper than emergency care. Freedom is gone: Republicans and their leaders such Sarah Palin, Rush, Hannity and Fox CEO are whining their freedom is gone. “We want to take back our country.” That is what they shout now. The Health law allows people to keep and chose doctors of their choice. In all it's Republicans, Fox News and other right wing media funded by insurance companies that are deceiving people about the health care law.
August 20 2010 at 10:23 PM Report abuse Permalink -19 rate up rate down ReplyTime for you to go back and read it again, my friend, and stop quoting statistics that are inflated for emotional impact. First, as a physician, I give "free" (meaning I get nothing) healthcare every day I work, as it is mandated being a member of hospital staffs; the answer to your "why are there not enough doctors?" question is that to a great many intelligent people it's simply not worth the years of work training, debt and subsequesnt legal exposure to become one as it once was. Second, wait til you see your premiums rise (or your contribution to your empoyer-based plan increase) and tell me how you're not paying more. This is not a left/right issue, it's a personal responsibility (including weight, cigarettes, diet, alcohol, choosing cell phones and cable over insurance premiums, etc) issue. We all can agree that hardship coverage should exist; the rest can (or could have been) handled by allowing true competition across states, medmal reform, insurance and pharmaceutical coverage reform (which was partially accomplished) and using unspent stimulus funds to handle the rest. We did NOT need this monstrosity, which is going to bankrupt future generations and strangle coverage for the elderly in its current form.

Go to your local emg. room tell them your sick have no ins. or money see how much efforts made to treat you wait for you bill in the mail
