Bill McCollum vs. Rick Scott in Florida: The 'Establishment' Strikes Back

After several Republican "establishment" candidates bit the dust this year when challenged by "outsiders" in Senate and gubernatorial primaries, the establishment now looks like it might strike back in Florida's race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. The contest will be decided in a primary on Tuesday.

State Attorney General Bill McCollum, a former 10-term congressman now in his fourth statewide campaign, had been considered the presumptive Republican nominee -- until April, when former health care executive Rick Scott jumped into the race. Scott put millions of dollars of his own money into the effort and rode an avalanche of campaign ads into a lead over McCollum.

Now, polls are pointing to a McCollum rebound -- Quinnipiac University had him leading Scott by 44 percent to 35 percent in a survey conducted Aug. 11-16. A look at the race by the Orlando Sentinel attributes McCollum's resurgence to his success in rallying the GOP establishment around him.

The Sentinel says campaign contributions from a wide array of interest groups and politically-connected companies have enabled McCollum to launch an effective counterattack against Scott who has tried to paint McCollum as a "failed career politician."

Contributors include U.S. Sugar, Walt Disney World, Florida Power & Light, Publix Supermarkets and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, the Sentinel said. The newspaper reported that "even the Republican Party of Florida has kicked in more than $3 million to pay for polling, signs, direct mail and two dozen consultants and campaign staffers."

Scott has a big lead when it comes to campaign ads, having poured in an estimated $37 million but McCollum has been able to counter by spending nearly $20 million, according to the Palm Beach Post.

McCollum has also pulled in some heavyweight endorsements ranging from popular former Gov. Jeb Bush to the Florida Chamber of Commerce.

From out of state, former GOP presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney have endorsed McCollum.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Scott is spending his own money but has too many problems to be elected. McCollum is being supported by all the special interest who are looking for something if he is elected. You need to ask what are they looking for. US Sugar gave $250,000 and are trying to sell their land to the state to save the Everglades. They are looking to get McCollum in office so they can get millions more than the containated land is worth. When Sink was running for CFO the only thing the Republicans could compain about her was that she did what all the banks did, buy smaller banks and causing the employees of the smaller banks to be out of a job.

Floridians........are you paying attention to what these candidates have done in the past. It is time for NEW BLOOD. This from Wikipedia: "Despite 39 audits dating back to 2000 warning of risky investments involving leveraged funds, the Florida State Board of Administration lost approximately one-third of the fund ($61.4 billion) between July 2008 and January 2009. The fund has since recovered over $30 billion in losses. Nineteen of these audits warning of risk were issued while Crist, Sink, and McCollum were trustees, and Sink was functioning as CFO of the state and treasurer on the SBA board. As a result of this "crisis of confidence" SBA executive director Coleman Stipanovich resigned his job in December 2007." THIS DOES NOT PAINT A ROSY PICTURE FOR SINK, CRIST, OR MC COLLUM. Do you really want one of these candidates watching over YOUR money?

I am always concerned by candidates who spend a fortune of their own money to get elected. Call me cynical, but it appears to me that if they'll dump millions to get that position; how many more millions do they intend for it to pay them back. Remember, rich businessmen rarely spend unless the payback is better than the investment.

I would far sooner trust the candidate that spends their own money. Look at the Obama campaign. Spent YOUR money, and now that he is POTUS, whether you voted for him or not, YOUR money is once again being taken to pay back the supporters: Unions, both public and private, financial institutions, lawyers, BigPharma, etc. Individual taxpayer funding of campaigns is the only way this mess of big money will be eliminated from buying elections. Either way, I would rather only have to pay once, not donate to elect someone, and then have to pay again to reimburse the big money boys.

News is reporting (not yours of course) that the Republican Party of Florida spent almost ALL of its money campaigning for McCollum against Scott, leaving almost nothing for the election after the primary or other candidates. This is the SAME organization Greer was head of. They've sunk our party backing McCollum for this race. At this point, at least we'd have Scott's money for ads, if he wins.
