Nevada Lawmaker Has Pronounced Preferences for State Name

You say po-TAY-to, I say po-TAH-to . . .

That familiar refrain could take on political relevance in the Silver State, where one lawmaker thinks the pronunciation of "Nevada" ought to be codified.

Assemblyman Harry Mortenson has submitted a draft request for a resolution asserting that though the preferred pronunciation of the state's name is "Ne-VAD-a," using the alternate "Ne-VAH-da" is also acceptable, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Mortenson says he's not asking Nevadans to change. He just wants the Spanish pronunciation recognized.

The Associated Press reports that the issue is nothing new. In 1944, local newspapers took former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey to task for his "East Coast" pronunciation during an appearance in Reno.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I'm from Kansas, and I know I'd really find it irritating if someone from Arkansas were to come up here and call it "Kansaw" even though they choose to pronounce their own state name as "Arkansaw." And what about Missouri? I've heard people pronounce it "Missour-uh" so many times it's sickening. And, having lived in Illinois, hearing people pronounce it "Ill-in-noise" is horrifically illannoying! However, I don't really see general people changing how they pronounce place names just because there's some pronunciation law enacted. This just sounds like a lot of rhetoric from someone who gets irritated too easily (like I was when I lived in Illinois...) and needs to calm down. There are a LOT more issues for people in the state of Nevada - employment (or the lack thereof), crime and poverty, jay-walking, etc. - than to spend time and resources on something like this. If they're trying to distract you with a law like this, I hope people are looking DEEP into the bill to see what OTHER kinds of stuff are being stuck in with it, because there's obviously something they DON'T want you to see and just be focused on this little "scandal."

I guess this is proof positive that the State of NE-VAH-DA has officially given up in trying worry with national deficit issues, neighboring states embroiled in heated debate over immigration issues, and life in general. This is one of the dumbest things I have read online in the last three days. I have been in bed all weekend with a horrible cold/sinus infection so I have had plenty of time to explore dumb things that are completely useless. Since the Nevadianites of Nevada obviously have nothing better to do, I submit that they help out solving another little dumb idea I read about last night concerning a bloated and useless research study that the American Welfare System wishes to begin relatively soon, however, I don't know why. What they want to do is to spend uncounted dollars at taxpayers expense to research if people who need federal assistance (EBT cards) will eat better if they give out coupons to them as an incentive program to help them eat less junk food and take down the nation's rising morbidly obese ratios...I say why do that for two reasons: first this is not needed to do research and should be done across the board for ALL AMERICANS NOT JUST THOSE USING FEDERAL ASSISTANCE; second this should be done regardless of if they choose to eat healthier or not but we cannot nor should we interfere forcing people to eat that which they do not want. It is their own fault if they get fat scarfing junk all the time. I got cottage cheese thighs but it is not anyone else fault but my own...but I try to stay active and watch what I eat also. If we go the way of the government telling us what all we can eat or not and how much then we sign away our rights to freedom and I already have parents thank you very much. I don't need another bunch that could not parent a bag let alone humanity. I digress. So, in short to give the good citizens of Nevada a fighting chance I say we employ the lawmakers to put their under taxed schedules and help them earn their keep...lets let them solve our national welfare research program because they seem to be on the ball over there in the west while the rest of us lag behind solving issues-attempting to try to sole issues-because they have all the answers and just seem to need a challenge! For anyone who didn't get it I am being very sarcastic with this because arguing and introducing a bill to make it official to pronounce the state's name a certain way is so far off the chart of absurdity that it hurts my brain thinking anyone gives a hoot about how it is pronounced! Wish we all had that kind of time on our hands, but does make me want to ponder what the punishment will be if someone mispronounces it, assuming that is there will be a fine or punishment of sorts should it actually happen. Nevada lawmakers need to get a true life and stop wasting their state constituents' tax dollars! And I thought my own wonderful State of SC was out in left field with some things...Nevada is in a league of its own!

Spanish????? This is AMERICA and Americans speak ENGLISH!!! Pandering to hispanics (illegal or legal) who refuse to learn English in America is offensive and insulting. If they want to see/hear/read everything in Spanish, then they can jolly-well just go home! We don't want or need them here.

Perhaps this issue is petty given the other serious problems we face today. But Nevada IS a Spanish word after all so it's understandable why some would prefer to pronounce it correctly.

Nevada is in America. Why should the Spanish pronunciation be recognized ?

Well, obviously because the word "Nevada" is a Spanish word. You wouldn't pronounce the name "Pedro" as "Peed Row", or Jose' as "Joe See", now would you? Or Arkansas as Are-Can-Zus? Well, maybe you would, but you'd be wrong.

We have 3 different ways of saying the same thing. In the state, we like Na-vad-a, the old Bogart movie, Treasure of the Sierra Nevada, the Califiornia movie makers pronounciation and often thought of as the Spanish style, and the Missouri way of Nah-vaaaaaa-dah.... long a's- in the second syllabul where one of the old state mental hospitals used to be...
