Bristol Palin to Earn $14,000 Speaker Fee; Levi Johnston Files Candidacy Form

Bristol Palin is following in her mother's footsteps, at least in so far as lucrative public speaking gigs go.

The 19-year-old daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin will earn $14,000 when she speaks in Louisville, Ky., Sept. 8, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports. The occasion is a fundraiser to benefit Lifehouse, a home for single mothers. Bristol knows the topic well: Her 2008 pregnancy drew the national spotlight when her mother campaigned for vice president as John McCain's running mate. She gave birth to son Tripp in December of that year and has had a highly publicized on-and-off relationship with Levi Johnston, the toddler's father.

Bristol Palin, Sarah PalinThis won't be Bristol's first experience in public speaking. Earlier this summer, she signed with a speaker's bureau, which has made her available for conferences and fundraisers as well as women's, youth, abstinence and ''pro-life'' programs. She's made public service announcements for Candie's Foundation, an organization that encourages teens to delay pregnancy, and has appeared on ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" in an episode centered on teen pregnancy.

Bristol has long way to go to catch up with her mother in terms of speaking fees, however. Sarah Palin reportedly earns $100,000 per speech, almost as much as her annual salary -- $125,000 -- when she was Alaska's governor, a position she left abruptly last year with 18 months remaining in her term.

As for Johnston, he's back in the spotlight this week too: TMZ.com reports that the 20-year-old has filed a "letter of intent" with the Alaska Public Offices Commission to run for municipal office in 2011, presumably for mayor of Wasilla, a post once held by Sarah Palin. The move is apparently part of Johnston's effort to land a reality-TV show.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I simply cannot understand whay someone would PAY to listen to perhaps one of the WORST examples of how to be a responsible teenager. She got pregnant, showed ZERO responsibility or maturity, had sex in her own house with mother nowhere to be found as a parent, and now she's REWARDED??? Where is the consequence? I would be EMBARRASSED if I was Bristol Palin, and even MORE embarrassed if I was her mother....but we all know what the Palin motivation is.....MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!

when one sits back and see's a daughter of a woman who ran for a seat in the white house and didn't have a thread of knowledge about what that position is all about let alone any real tried and true knowledge about the topic's that were presented to her.. Now here is the daughter getting paid for a speaking engagement ... $14,000 for how long to talk... We allow our selves to let them comtinue in the spot-light , while many , many people struggle to make ends meet , as myself... Iam hoping that basic common sense will prevail in these current times and that the desparity of the work classes , be able to reap the fruits of their dedication to this country and to our common cause to be able to earn a decent living...
