Alvin Greene Told to Leave S.C. Restaurant After Alleged Altercation

Alvin Greene, the Democratic candidate for Senate in South Carolina, was told to leave a Seneca, S.C., restaurant Saturday after a woman accompanying him got into a fight with county Democratic Party members holding a meeting there, police say.

Oconee County Democratic Party officials had asked the controversial candidate to speak at their monthly meeting at Jimmy's Restaurant, but rescinded the invitation after Greene, 32, was indicted Aug. 13 on a felony charge of showing pornography to a college student.

According to the Associated Press, Seneca Police Chief John Covington said that Greene nevertheless attended, and a woman with him, Dottie Sue Maggart-Feldman, got into an argument with people there. According to the AP report: "Party officials called police, who say the owner of the restaurant kicked out the pair and ended the party's meeting. No charges were filed, and police say no tickets were issued."

Campaign opportunities and Democratic Party support for Greene -- a surprise winner in the June 8 primary -- were rare, even before the indictment, a felony charge of disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity. (Authorities say Greene showed Internet pornographic images to a University of South Carolina student.) He did appear in his hometown of Manning, S.C., for a brief speech last month, though he took no questions.

In the November general election, Greene faces incumbent Republican Sen. Jim DeMint -- who is looking like more of a sure thing each time Greene makes the news -- and Green Party candidate Tom Clements.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Hope this is not a double post........ Reason some people call it a set-up is, he somehow beat the other democratic candidate in the primary's. The democratic party leaders in the state have asked Greene to step down, and he will not. Soooooooo us citizens are stuck like chuck with DeMint 6 more years. South Carolina's GOOD OLE BOY SYSTEM at work. Alive & Well, as always................................................................

Must admit that I had a good laugh over all this. Iused to live in Columbia so am aware of state politics, etc. That this man would dare to go against the main line and do well... I don't think it was a set-up, I think that it was the people saying that they are few up with the status quo.

I agree with the two term limit comment from earlier. How long are we going to let both republicans and democrats get so embedded in Washington that they are just playing games with the rest of us. It shouldn't be a career for these baffoons. Please, let's limit their terms and power!....and as far as this article, this guy's in way over his head and should drop out of the campaign and let a more experienced person run on the ticket.

Will all of you fine citizens please calm down... He was 'indicted' not convicted, not sentenced, not arrested, not jailed! Hell, Jimmy Hoffa was indicted a hundred times and still came up smelling like a rose. (well now he pushes up roses). Bill Clinton was charged with... (I really cannot remember ALL the things he was charged with) The bottom line here folks, we should assume he is innocent until proven guilty! I believe that is the way it is supposed to work here in America. If the worse thing this man does is look at and pass around nude pictures... He could become the most honest man in DC!

This is another attempt by the SC contentious republicans to elect a sure loser in the dem primary, ala Obama over Clinton, which backfired on them badly. This attempt will work because it's so rediculous, SC is making a mockery of the election process!

Really? You mean like all those dead Dem voters in Ohio and Florida? You mean like all those black voters that are carted to the polls by Dem operatives and told how to vote and where to make the marks on the ballots>? You mean that kind of a mockery?!?

No matter how bad you trash him and make fun of him , he is no different then the rest of the dogs in washington.Remmember the republican senator that voted no on every bill that came before him pertaining to gay rights, then gets busted for trying to give a Bj in an airport bathroom. And the things Ted Kennedy got away with are a crime. Yes it's nice to be an independent and tell it like it is.I hope he does get elected i think he would not have voted to hold up unemployment checks for out of work americans while at the same time trying to keep the tax breaks for the rich like the republicans did. He may be goofy but would have done the right thing. and yes i blame both the dems and rep. for the bad shape our great country is in. Everyne should register independent and make them answer to the people

we dont need people like this no matter how much of my tax money they give away ,and they are all bad people every politition is guilty. our choices are limited to the least bad and those who continue to spend and give away and grow the size of the govt are the ones who need to go first.

I pity Mr. Greene, I do. He is in way over his head and one has to think that it will be hard for him to hold his head up in the future. That is not to say that I condone his alleged behavior, I do not. I just see him as a guy who has bitten off more than he can chew in a lifetime.

I'm not a fan of Alvin Greene, but I do wonder about the charges against him. Unless the college student was under the age of 18, which is uncommonly young for a college student, how could showing porn to such a person be a felony?

Showing hardcore pornography to someone who doesn't wish to see it is a crime. Why should a woman, regardless of her age, be subjected to sexual harassment and obscene images that against her wishes? Not cool, if true.

As a fellow Veteran I wish him luck. However, this does not bode well for him. If I lived in SC I would not vote for him based on the issue and the party he represents. Really this is status quo for that Party. His problem is his name is not Kennedy.
