Nearly 30 Percent Support Tea Party, Poll Finds

Nearly three in 10 Americans say they are supporters of the Tea Party, according to a new survey, while more than half the respondents say they hold negative opinions of the conservative grassroots movement.

A CBS News Poll released Thursday found 29 percent of those asked considered themselves Tea Party supporters and 54 percent did not. Fully 17 percent had no opinion either way.

The results are similar to last month's but show more support for the Tea Party than in April of this year, CBS said.

Not surprisingly, a majority -- 56 percent -- of Tea Party supporters identified as conservative. Of those, 44 percent are Republicans, while 43 percent said they are independents. Not many at all, only 13 percent, called themselves Democrats.

The survey also asked Tea Party supporters what they think of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has become an icon of the movement. Forty-five percent of Republicans, 41 percent of conservatives and 49 percent of Tea Partiers hold favorable opinions of Palin, according to CBS.

But among the public overall, Palin doesn't get such positive ratings. Only 23 percent of respondents have a favorable opinion of the former vice presidential candidate, while 40 percent view her unfavorably.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Tea Party is no threat to anyone. They are Republicans voting Republican. What else is new?

The Tea Party, Green Party and Republicans need join together forming a joint venture to run a Tea Party candidate for President and a Republican for Vice Pres. (Arnold comes to mind) if they don't want to lose to Obama again! This is NOT the time to have a power struggle between them. If they don't, they have no one to blame for Obama becoming a dictator but himself. If you believe this is a bit over the top, think back to 2-3 years ago when you would have said our country and world could have gotten themselves in this much trouble. If someone is getting something for free, someone else is going to have to pay for it. This really is the tip of the iceburg. History can repeat itself, like when Ross Perot and the Republicans lost to Clinton...the Democrats are the best at deviding and conquering by spending your and my money. They have some wonderful political ideas, but the BIG governement concept will make this country become as troubled and poor as Mexico if we don't watch out. Only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote. If you don't think it can get worse, just see what will happen if Obama wins again. He is not the one making the rules, he is only a puppet for a wealthy group of families that want the rich to get richer and the middle class disappear. And to think, I used to scoff at these ideas. Live and learn. Don't become complacent. Taxation without representation has come unless we can vote for officials that have some morals left. Take care and God bless.

Of the people involved in the Tea Party how many have PhD's in economics and finance? Will the detailed and well researched positions of the Tea Party in these subjects hold up in the long range if they are enacted? What they don't know is that huge national economies, such as ours, are like drugged lumbering elephants. It is really really difficult to make an economy do what you want. Many opponents to the democrats think they can control the economy and create jobs. Can they really? It seems they are really full of hot air and that what they are really doing is trying to hoodwink unaware potential voters into thinking that they can solve these monsterous complex problems if they get elected. Can they? Probably not. During 8 years of the Bush administration most all of these current economic problems were created. A lack of careful and enforced regulation of business both financially oriented and otherwise has led us to this current group of problems. Letting business go on its own doesn't work. They are often greedy and want to grow as quickly as possible, and this leads to almost not legal if not ileagle activities. This is what has happened with the hands off attitude of the Bush administration. The Tea Party wants more of this. Business often can't be trusted to go on without somewhat strict regulation.

I think we can all agree that our government is way too big, way too intrusive and out of control. However, this didn't just start to happen the day President Obama took office. Where was all this concern when previous presidents were racking up record deficits, expanding the federal government, trashing the Constitution and intruding into our lives. I agree with some of the Tea Party platform. But find it hard to support a party led by people who turn a blind eye when a republican does something, but get hysterical when a democrat does it. Should't we judge our elected officials the same regardless of party affiliation?

I believe Sara Palin is adding to the confusion of the two parties. We need somebody to stand and tell us how to get America on the right road. We gave so much in this country to be proud of and we need these parties to come together to make this a better country, not tear it down.

Why do you need someone to tell you? All these parties will do is tear it down. Just as they have been for the 40+ years I personally remember. wise up and decide what is right and make a stand. Look for the truth about what is actually happening rather that following some medias or politicans opinion.

anyone who does not support the tea party movement (TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY) is more than welcome to pay my taxes for me. The people who oppose the tea party are the very people who don't pay taxes so what do they care what happens to the rest of us who do pay taxes. We have a large group of people who live on the Gov't dime from birth to death and pay NO taxes. Wake up. NO more gov't handouts. If you need money for food, rent, gas, whatever. Make money and go buy your own.Leave my money alone it is not yours. You did not work for it and you don't deserve it.

I don't belong to or believe in the Tea Party and their platform and my spouse and I have paid taxes all our life. Your contention that only TPers pay taxes is the biggest lie the teabaggers put out there. You have more people in the republican party and tea bag party that get freebies than anyone else. The TP queen- Big Mouth Bachmanns' family hauls in a quarter mil in farm subsidies. Her husband takes in government money at his counseling clinic. And then we have ol' Pay Me Paylin who even has the free health care at the expense of the taxpayers for her and her entire family including her grandchild. Of course she doesn't want the rest of the people to get health care! She's got hers! Of course she also took money from Alaska for living in her own house, for hauling her kids around with her on official business and got the GOP to pay for one hell of a wardrobe for her and her family. And no- it wasn't all returned. You have all these factory farms that contribute to the repubs and get farm subsidies for NOT growing food. And lets not forget the tax breaks the corporations get for taking American jobs overseas. And then the low tax rate for the wealthiest helps increase our deficit but they have been getting it for 9 years. Where are all the jobs they are supposed to create if they get to pay less taxes? They are sitting on it and getting richer and they sure aren't creating jobs! As far as your assertions about people getting free money and sitting around not working- you have no idea what you are talking about. Unless a person is ill or disabled and completely unable to work, in order to receive assistance they must work. On top of that, there is a 5 year limit for anyone to receive assistance, so no one who is able bodied sits around drawing welfare payments and being "lazy". That is just more of the lies the republicans and the right wing tea party spreads. I am always amazed at these people who proclaim their Christianity and yet lie through their teeth every time they open their mouth. You need to stop listening to people who lie and do some real work yourself. Like some investigating from somewhere other than Faux News and the rest of the right wing who don't know truth when it slaps them in the face.

You can add my name for support to the Tea Party. If we don't take back our country, we are going to lose everything we hold dear.

Seems there's a contradiction in this article, saying that 54% did not consider themselves Tea Party supporters is not the same as "more than half the respondents say they hold negative opinions of the conservative grassroots movement." A person can not be a supporter of a group but still have a positive opinion of that group. Sloppy journalism or deliberate misrepresentation???
