Joe Miller Fears Lisa Murkowski Will Push Legal Battle for Alaska Senate Seat

Fairbanks lawyer Joe Miller, the Sarah Palin favorite who holds a slim lead in the undecided Alaska Republican Senate primary, says he fears incumbent Lisa Murkowski will push a protracted legal battle to keep her seat, pulling "an Al Franken, if you will."

Miller's mention of Franken is a reference to the 2008 Senate election in Minnesota, which was so close the outcome was disputed in court for months. But his singling out of Democrat Franken was somewhat puzzling, as it was the incumbent Republican, Norm Coleman, who trailed during the court review and legal wrangling. In other words, it would appear that Miller, the insurgent, is in the Franken role in 2010. He holds a 1,668-vote margin over Murkowski, according to the AP, with as many as 16,000 absentee ballots still to be counted.

Murkowski is getting the assistance of a National Republican Senatorial Committee lawyer, according to The Hill newspaper. That's what worries Miller: "It makes you scratch your head and wonder what's really going on here." Miller said he wants to make sure the votes are counted fairly, "without any type of game play." He told Fox Business News, "It concerns us any time somebody lawyers-up and tries to pull an Al Franken, if you will. We are very concerned that there may be some attempt here to skew the results."

Palin, whose endorsement gave the little-known Miller credibility in the race, is a rival of the Murkowski family and defeated the senator's father, Frank Murkowski, in the 2006 Alaska governor's race. Miller, an Iraq war veteran, also had backing from the conservative Tea Party movement.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Your facts are INCORRECT, Norm Coleman was leading until 400 votes showed up on a Indian reservation and 300 turned up in the trunk of a car days after teh election. Statistically Impossible, all 400 votes from the reservation were both for Franken and Obama. Norm Coleman LEAD on election night and after the Machine recount. He lost when the Dem cheating machine got involved and the Liberal courts kicked out Military overseas ballots predominitly for Coleman.

I think Ms. Murkowski should follow Sarah Palin's advice and RELOAD!! Palin is playing with fire, and sooner or later she is going to get burned, big time. It's just a matter of time with her reckless endorsements. Lisa Murkowski is well liked and has done EXCELLENT work for Alaska over the past 8 years. Her opponent has no record, of course, and Palin is using personal bad feelings and vindictive jealousy to try and HIJACK the election. Well, hopefully the votes will come out FAIR AND SQUARE for Ms. Murkowski, and whatever reference this opponent makes to the Minnesota election is not only irrelevant, but rather CHILDISH. Once again the rapublican tea party fringe tries to muddy the water and and try and play the victim card....not this time.
