As the five year anniversary again summons up memories of Katrina's devastation of the Gulf Coast, Louisiana voters are giving higher marks to former President George Bush for handling of the storm's aftermath and dealing with crisis than they do for President Obama's handling of the BP oil spill, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Aug. 21-22.

Fifty-four percent say Bush has done a better job in "helping Louisiana to deal with crisis" while 34 percent give more credit to Obama. Thirteen percent are undecided.

Bush gets positive marks for his crisis response from 24 percent of Democrats while Obama gets thumbs-up from only 2 percent of Republicans. Independents credit Bush more by a 42 percent to 30 percent margin with 29 percent undecided.
Barack Obama, George Bush
Sixty-one percent disapprove of Obama's handling of the oil spill while 32 percent approve, with 6 percent undecided. By contrast, a smaller margin 47 percent to 44 percent -- disapproved of how Bush handled Katrina's aftermath. Nine percent were undecided.

Republicans are much more united in their negative view of Obama's performance on the oil spill than Democrats are in support of Obama. Ninety-one percent of Republicans disapprove of Obama's efforts, joined by 28 percent of Democrats. Sixty-four percent of Democrats approve of Obama's oil spill response. Independents disapprove by a 72 percent to 20 percent margin with 7 percent undecided. (Independents make up 11 percent of the sample in the poll).

The only thing that this proves is that Democrats are more willing to look at matters more objectively and acknowledge that Obama can and does foul up. Republicans, on the other hand, will condemn Obama no matter what he does or doesn't do, even if it means ignoring the fact that even Bush admits that he fouled up.

This is not a proper question since neither President was not in total control of either situations. With Katrina it was the local government that screwed everything up including. I have friends that are owner operators of tractor trailers. They were hired to truck emergency provisions to the area. They were sent to areas where they sat for up to a month. They were paid more for using their trucks for storage then if they went back on the road. They were given down time money, motel fees, and food allowance. With the oil spill it was the coast guard and the EPA that tied everything up. All that wanted to be done had to wait for someones seal of approval.

Might I remind all of my fellow americans that Dubya waited a week before sending in any form or organized aid, when there was an agency already designed and tasked for helping in the event of a natural disaster(FEMA)!!! The US as a government, does not drill oil. There are no United States of America drilling rigs anywhere in the world. The federal government might oversee and do inspections on the rigs but we do not have drilling rigs, or equipment to deal with a disaster of this type. Calling the federal governments handling of the Gulf Oil disaster good would be ill advised, but they did the best they could with what they had. The Louisiana National Guard, the Air National Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard all have helicopters, the National Guard and Army Reserve have trucks that can drive through 5 feet of water. These could have rolled 3 hours after Katrina hit, not 7 days.

Might I remind you that it is not the Federal Governments job to bail everyone out for everything. There are chains of command specifically the local government whos responsibility it really is. Once each layer of local Government failed in N.O. the Feds moved in. I would say that 1 week is rasonable considering all that was involved. While these disasters are terrible you cannot expect a magical response to happen in the blink of an eye. And there is also some personal responsibility involved as well - we all saw where some that had a chance to get out chose to stay. If you keep blaming Gov. for everything you are only giving them the OK to control everything.

Here in California, we all understand that after a major earthquake there will be NO assistance for at least one week. This is because even the liberals in charge of California have the good sense to tell us this BEFORE any major event. Buenamama makes a good point: why is New Orleans so different from other US cities which have suffered similar disasters. The mishandling of the initial Katrina response in Lousiana was, IMHO, an entirely local and state problem. As for the BP issue; while the US Government should not have been expected to plug the well, it seems reasonable to me that it could have at least gotten out of the way of those who were prepared to protect the shoreline.

I wonder if the poll reached people who were so disgusted with the Bush administration's response that they did not return to New Orleans. Many of the people most affected cannot respond because they are dead. This poll's results cannot be taken seriously.

We understand the short memories of Republicans out there. How does one forget eight years of no accomplishing of their agendas? Hmm, people are still on welfare, abortions are still taking place, the Bible is not back in the schools and there was no social security reform. Oh, there were tax cuts to the wealthiest 2% of Americans and to all companies, who, in turn, took the money and your jobs with 'em. Oh, and President Obama decided to leave those Republican incentives in place. Now, with two additional years of Bush and Republican economic policies, that makes ten years of Republican economic failed policies. Be mad at the president all you want, but make sure it's for the right reasons, not because of party affiliation bias or racial bias. Be mad at the president for having tried to appease the Republicans by keeping those tax cuts in place. He thought it might cause them to work together on Capitol Hill. They decided to be obstructionists instead.

You always seem to blame Republicans. What you seem to forget is that Independents, like myself, are sick of Democrats and what your adjenda for the past six years has lea to!!!!!!

Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La., says Obama's team has brought a more practical and flexible approach. Many local officials offer similar reviews. Even Doug O'Dell, former President George W. Bush's recovery coordinator, says the Obama administration's "new vision" appears to be turning things around. Too bad people's misguided bias and the misinformation coming from those who really have shown their racist agenda is affecting common sense. I thought we were a bigger and better country than that.

Just what could have Obama done? Put on a wetsuit, dove down a mile under water and plugged the leak? He could not have done anything to get the leak capped any faster than any other person. Including the crying governors and pathetic right wingers that complain all the time about everything. How soon you forget the poor people stranded on their roof tops when Bush flew over the City while people went without water and food for days waiting for a responce. It amazes me that any poll would compare the two events and just how much blind hatred the right wing disinformation has developed. Maybe everone has gold fevor.

Your right he personnally couldnt fix the problem but he didnt visit or talk to BP until after 60 days into the leak. Maybe he could have skipped a round of golf or cut one of his vacations short but he elected to do many other things before he handled this as a priority. This is what happens when someone has NO experience. If you wouldnt hire a man to run a major company with tens of thousands of employees with anything less than 20 years experience in that field, how in the world did Americans elect a man that has never run a company, served in the military and was involved in politics for 6 years.
