Obama to Senate GOP: Drop the Blockade, Pass Small Business Relief Bill

President Obama is accusing Senate Republicans of harming the U.S. economy by blocking a bill to aid small business. He said the measure should be the Senate's "first order of business" when it returns Sept. 13 from its summer recess.

"Holding this hostage is directly detrimental to our economic growth. So I ask Senate Republicans to drop the blockade," Obama told reporters at the White House. He referred to a story -- apparently this one from USA Today -- that said small business hires, purchases and real estate expansions are on hold, awaiting the stalled bill.

Small businesses would receive $18 billion in tax breaks under the measure. It also would establish a $30-billion loan fund to make it easier for community banks to extend credit to small businesses. "This bill is fully paid for," Obama said. "It will not add to the deficit. And there's no reason to block it besides pure partisan politics."

Some Republicans objected to the loan fund. Some supported the bill but objected to limits that Democrats put on amendments.

Obama was on vacation last week during a spate of bad economic data, and more is expected in job numbers due Friday. He said his economic team is "hard at work" on additional ways to improve both short-term growth and long-term competitiveness. He promised more details "in the days and weeks to come" on four topics: Extending expiring Bush-era tax cuts for the middle class, "redoubling" investment in clean energy and research and development, rebuilding more infrastructure, and tax cuts "that encourage businesses to put their capital to work creating jobs here in the United States."

Wonder why no one ever asks how something is being paid for. We are now hearing out of DC that the current bills are PAID FOR, and will not add to the deficit, but no one ever asks HOW they are paid for. We have no money. We are borrowing from every country with anything to lend, yet DC is telling us this small business bill is paid for. WHERE DID THE MONEY COME FROM?

This bill is paid for with a tax on companies sending jobs overseas. No Republican in the Senate denies it is paid for. The Republicans are only looking at the next election not the good of the country. 70% of Wall Street money is now going to the Republicans because they didn't get what they wanted from the Democrats.

What Obama is offering small business owners is not going to do a damn thing. No successful business person is going to put themselves into debt by borrowing money, nor increase their employee base, until they feel confident they understand the full impact of the Obama agenda. Why would they do that? Obama is making political hay, the business people understand this, and they WILL NOT bite.

The Republican stratergy for the past 10 years is to do everything possible to make a democrat look bad, even to the detriment of the future of America so they can get into power and run the government for the benefit of the super rich. These strategists create grass root organizations like the Tea party, Freedom works, etc. and use wedge issues like birth control, gays, immigration, religion, race baiting to rile up their base to vote for Republican candidates. When will the middle class republican party supporter wake up to the fact that they are being used. Give us intelligent dialog, work toward the middle, make decisions that are beneficial to all Americans, protect democracy, not create a theocracy within in which we all lose our freedoms and don't let giant corporation own our congress. Wake up America before it is too late.

They do not need the Republicans for that. They do a great job of that all by themselves. Just look at this administration. They will go down in history as POL101 how not to act in Washington!!

I don't understand, if we have a Bill that would help put people back to work and help small business's that doesn't add to the deficit then why is it being stalled. That simply doesn't make sense to be when we are in a mess here with growing the economy wouldn't more jobs kick start that. More jobs means more money and more taxes paid in as well as giving people a better moral to spend a little. I don't get it, do the republicans not care about this Country?

All the republicans are asking for is some language changes which the democrats refuse to agree with! We need properly written bills not the half baked slop that has come out of Washington for the last 18 months.

Once again the Republicans are standing in the way, and saying "NO" to a bill that would give relief to small business. The reason they say "NO" is that , according to them, there are not enough amendments added to the bill. Know what amendments thy are talking about? The ones that would extend the Bush cuts for the rich This is the same reasoning they gave when , without any shame at all, would not extend health benefits to the 9/11"FIRST RESPONDERS" who now have health problems because of their heroic deeds that day, saving people without any concern for themselves-----how do you say "NO" to those people?

Its not about making jobs here in the USA and its not about putting more money in the hands of banks to make loans to small businesses. The American people and businesses have done this to themselves. We all want higher wages and the companies want lower wages and more profit. We are working ourselves right out of own nation. China and India are in a position to have economic growth like we did back in the early 1900's. America might as well go back to being farmers and cattle ranchers because we don't have far to go until we are saturated with all of the durable goods we need. What will happen then? Has it already happened?

"Extending expiring Bush-era tax cuts for the middle class" We've been told for more than 8 years that the Bush tax cuts went only to the upper class. Now we find out that they also went to the middle and lower classes? Did the Dems lie to us for the past 8+ years or are they lying now? There is no wrong answer....

CJJANIS...........to late to rewrite what the Libs/Progs/Dems have been lying about for so long. Now, Obama finds himself in a muddle, just as he has with the Iraq war. Oh, what to do. We have to admit everyone benefitted from the GWB tax cuts, the surge worked pretty darn well...........how are we going to spin this?

Ron, No they didn't have the votes to stop the bill..... But we will have the votes to DEFUND THE BILL.... Kinda like torture for the Dems..... "we have to sign the bill to see whats in the bill" this kind of logic deserves to be in the dumpster along with the "honorable....what's her name"?

The best TAX BREAK for small business is get rid of the health care.........if you can't understand how much more it is to pay someone $1000.00 more a month per person I guess you just don't get it. It comes right out of the onwners pocket. IM PRETTY SURE THIS WON'T MAKE IT ON LINE

One sure way to increase hiring by small business would be to repeal the health care bill. Small business men have no fear of the Republicans and their votes in the Senate. It is Obama and his anti business policies that they fear. The President seems to believe that the solution to every problem is to throw money at it. That solution has failed everywhere else it was tried. Why should it be expected to work here?

Small businesses benefit from the health care bill. Small companies to not have to provide the insurance that their employees will have in 2012. Why did so many Detroit jobs go across the lake to Toronto? Because the government health care plan made the cars almost 1000.00 cheaper to build.
