U.S. law enforcement officials told ABC News the suspects were taken off a United Airlines jet Monday and were charged by Dutch police with "preparation of a terrorist attack."
Prosecutors in the Netherlands said the men were detained at the request of U.S. authorities. They were identified as Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Soofi, of Detroit, Michigan, and Hezem al Murisi. A neighbor of al Soofi told ABC News he is from Yemen.
Al Soofi was carrying "$7,000 in cash and what looked like mock explosive devices in two checked bags, seven cell phones -- some of them we're told were taped to empty bottles -- and watches taped to shampoo bottles," according to CBS News:
Al Soofi was singled out for a pat down at Birmingham International Airport in Alabama on Sunday. His checked baggage had set off an alarm as it was screened.
Officials say al Soofi, who originally was heading through Dulles to Yemen, had changed his itinerary to the Amsterdam flight. The two bags carrying those suspicious items did not go with the man on the flight to Amsterdam. Instead, the two bags continued on al Soofi's original path to Dulles Airport near Washington -- where they were confiscated by U.S. authorities.
Authorities also found a boxcutter and three large knives, according to ABC News. The two were allowed to board the flight at Chicago's O'Hare Sunday night despite security concerns surrounding al Soofi, who began his journey in Birmingham.
It's unclear whether the suspects are connected to any terrorist organization. Investigators will try to determine whether al Soofi was testing security procedures.
The New York Times emphasized that on Monday night the men had not been charged with any crime and that the whole episode might be a misunderstanding. "There's nothing at all confirmed at this point that's associated with terrorism," the Times quote one unidentified official as saying.
I think it's outrageous that they allowed the person to continue on his flight after finding what they found in his baggage ! While I'm glad that they are detained right now, there are probably hundred's of other terrorists ready to step in line and take their place. Al Qaida if nothing else, are very patient people. Their war will never end. Clearly this shows that they are still actively trying to find out new ways to harm the United States.
August 31 2010 at 7:18 AM Report abuse Permalink +4 rate up rate down ReplyIt doesn't "clearly" show any such thing at this point. There has been NO information released that indicates these two have ANY ties to al-Qaeda. Let the authorities do their jobs without your amateur extrapolations.
August 31 2010 at 1:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTerrorists around the world will certainly be encouraged by the deplorable fact that these two men were able to get most of their faux bomb-containing luggage onboard an airplane. Unfortunately, this "dry run" highlights the fact that international airline security measures are always going to be fallible. Consequently, air travelers must entrust their safety to God, not to an incompetent international airline security system.
August 31 2010 at 6:35 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyTheir luggage was re-routed to where it could be examined more closely, without tipping them off, and they were detained when they got to their destination. IF they were conducting a "dry run", they've now been stopped. WHAT is fallible about that?
August 31 2010 at 1:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe scary version of this situation? How many more of these assassins were making "dry runs" and did not get caught? Let´s brace ourselves! The days when these monsters were "just a bunch of crazy, uneducated fanatics" are long gone. Latest example: an arab terrorist arrested in Spain a couple of days ago, well educated, living in the same small village for 7 YEARS, blending in perfectly, learning, not only spanish, but even the local regional language. Some of his neighbours were interviewed and they said that he was a nice guy, friendly, even helped someone move in the building. These people have been emigrating to the majority of european countries by the hundreds of thousands for quite some time. Are they all terrorist? No, JUST ENOUGH OF THEM! They are educating and preparing themselves, waiting, for what we see, even years for THEIR DAY. What´s coming, and it is coming, whether we prefer to put our heads in the sand or not, is going to cripple the world. Good luck to the rest of us!

Any person from the Middle East who would try to transport these items is eight mentally ill or threatening to the U.S. and the world. Lock 'em up, but not in the US so we have to support their containment.
August 31 2010 at 1:56 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyThere is no way to know at this point whether the claims about the cell phones and bottles are true or distorted rumors. There are many reasons why someone would travel with a lot of cash or knives that are perfectly innocent, and have nothing to do with mental illness. Let the authorities do their jobs without your armchair assistance. IF they have committed a crime, then they will be charged and prosecuted.
August 31 2010 at 1:25 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyto say that this might be a misunderstanding is the craziest thing I have ever heard. I travel quiet often and I see normal every day people get held -up by tsa while people who look suspious walk right through. tsa acts like they are scared to death to stop an arab looking person. just how many white men with southern accents and innocent looking grandmothers have they caught trying to board a plane with explosives. all of this political correctness is going to get people killed if it is not corrected. most muslims are not terroist but most terrorist are muslim. the people that allowed these guys on that plane should be fired. some of you are going to say everybody makes mistakes. while that's true most of us don't make mistakes that get inocent people killed. TSA needs a complete shake down from top to bottom.
August 31 2010 at 12:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt is NOT illegal to pack odd items or knives in checked baggage. Lots of people have to do so for work. UNTIL/UNLESS there is EVIDENCE that a crime was committed, it is entirely possible that the whole thing was a misunderstanding. It would be irresponsible for a newspaper not to point that out. You check "normal every day people" [sic] because the smartest thing would be for terrorists to send the MOST innocent-looking person to do the job. But first, they'd probably let Americans work up a frenzy against Arabs/Muslims as a distraction. If you're focused on Muhammed and his innocent alarm clock or vibrating toothbrush or pocketknife collection, you won't notice when the sweet old granny sneaks through with explosives intended to hurt people.
August 31 2010 at 1:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy do they get so serious at the airport with us regular folk and then let the guy get on a plane after all those suspicious items????? And still no charges? This is what is wrong with our country, I thought by being on a plane in America, we would not see this kind of thing, thought we were safe, but nope we are not. I am sick of my own country because we are too lenient and do not do enough to keep our people safe. And as far as green cards, why are we handing them all out like candy to people who don't even intend to assimilate into our society??? Pick people who want the American dream and who want to speak English, our country is screwed up and getting worse by the minute.
August 30 2010 at 11:42 PM Report abuse Permalink +67 rate up rate down ReplyA month before 9/11, actor James Woods took the Boston to Los Angeles flight. He noticed Arab men in the first class area acting strangely. He not only reported it to the flight attendants, but he also informed the FBI. One of those men was Mohammed Atta. We should take this incident very seriously.
August 30 2010 at 11:39 PM Report abuse Permalink +46 rate up rate down ReplyWhy would the New York Times write it might be a misunderstanding?? Terroist tactics are no misunderstanding. The security of our nation should be of the highest priority! Has everyone already forgotten 9/11???
August 30 2010 at 11:19 PM Report abuse Permalink +70 rate up rate down ReplyCarrying odd items in your luggage is not necessarily a terrorist tactic. If the investigation proves that they were up to something illegal, then they'll be charged with a crime. Until then, it's possible that the whole thing is just a misunderstanding, and it would be irresponsible of any paper to not make that clear.
August 30 2010 at 11:47 PM Report abuse Permalink -66 rate up rate down ReplyThe article in itself is fine until we get to this part: "The New York Times emphasized that on Monday night the men had not been charged with any crime and that the whole episode might be a misunderstanding." Keyword being "New York Times" a publication not worth the bark from the tree that the paper came from that is was printed on. No personal attacks here Mr/Ms comment enabler, just plain common sense from concerned Americans. Why does this particular story need a moderator in the first place??
August 30 2010 at 11:13 PM Report abuse Permalink +48 rate up rate down ReplyIt is only a matter of time before the terrorists realize they can walk into a crowd with explosives packed around them to kill Americans in America. Then we will be like Israel, we will not be safe anywhere in AMERICA! I don't give a hoot about their rights, I am more concerned with my rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
