U.S. Muslims Try to Counter Suspicion and Attacks With Video Message

A video designer and his friends in northern Virginia on Monday launched an affecting public service announcement featuring a montage of American Muslims, including children and senior citizens, a doctor and a cop, a Phillies fan and faces of different races, all aimed at countering the wave of suspicion and Islam-bashing stemming from the mosque proposed near Ground Zero.

The new effort, called "My Faith My Voice," resulted from a brainstorming session by a group of young Muslim professionals in the DC area who were upset at the rising tide of Islamophobia in the country. The video was produced by David Hawa, a 37-year-old Muslim who was born in Washington and raised in Virginia "as just another kid who happened to speak two languages."

Hawa and his friends came up with the idea on Tuesday, Aug. 24, filmed some three dozen people out of 100 who showed up for a casting call on Friday, and now the video appears to be going viral, drawing more than 100,000 hits to the site by Tuesday. The video has been featured on leading networks and Hawa continues to get media requests.

The PSA comes as authorities in various states are investigating a number of possible bias and hate-crime incidents directed at Muslim targets. On Sunday, the FBI announced it was joining the investigation of a fire at the future site of a mosque in Murfreesboro, Tenn., that has been a catalyst for protests.

A brick was thrown through the window of a California mosque last week and a few days earlier signs were left at the mosque that read, "No temple for the god of terrorism at Ground Zero." Earlier this month, a plastic pig inscribed with messages such as "Remember 9-11" and "MO HAM MED the Pig" was stuffed into the mailbox of another Islamic center in California. (Like Jews, Muslims have a prohibition on eating pork.)

The public service video was initially posted Monday on YouTube and hopes to reverse the dynamic of bias.

"In recent weeks, a lot of people have been telling you what to think about Muslims," the nearly three dozen speakers say in the minute-long video. "They say you should fear me, suspect me, hate me. But the truth is, I don't want to impose my faith on you. I don't want to take over this country. And I don't support terrorism in any form."

And in a patriotic flourish worthy of Glenn Beck's rally on the Mall on Sunday, the Muslim speakers add:

"Islam teaches me to respect all people, improve society, stand up for justice for all. I am here and have been here for generations wanting the same thing you do: the chance to pursue life, liberty, peace and happiness."

It concludes: "I am an American. I am a Muslim. This is my faith. This is my voice."

Hawa says the video is explicitly not attached to any Islamic group or other advocacy organization because "then there would be an agenda."

Neither Hawa nor the speakers in the video take any position on the controversial Islamic center, Park51, proposed for Lower Manhattan near Ground Zero.

"We thought this would be a nice opportunity to give Muslims a soapbox," Hawa said. "It seems that in the Park51 controversy, a lot of people are speaking on our behalf, but Muslims themselves haven't been heard."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. This should have happened after 9/11, but ALL muslims, whether here or elsewhere, stayed silent and did not speak out against the terrorists. It's a bit late now.

This message is one the lack of which before now has contributed greatly to the unease some feel toward practitioners of Islam. A truly peaceful congregation should speak loudly and repeatedly to denounce murderous behavior exercised in the name of its faith. The silence has been deafening.

I am an athiest. I do not believe that there is a man, spirit or whoever with his/her finger on the pulse of the universe. I do respect others and their wish to pray to a god, priest, ghost or whoever. But I wish you would all do it quietly. Please don't start your religious wars or bomb places of worship different from yours, live quietly in your beliefs and I won't think you the fools.

rogerduly9:09 PM Aug 30, 2010 I think things are going to get worse before they get better. It may be a light breeze today, but a change is definitely in the air. Injustice and racism are still prevalent in the US. Hispanics, Muslims and Blacks are second class citizens. ************ So, you are stating that Obama is a second class citizen? How did he get elected?...

I think things are going to get worse before they get better. It may be a light breeze today, but a change is definitely in the air. Injustice and racism are still prevalent in the US. Hispanics, Muslims and Blacks are second class citizens. A charasmatic leader like Sarah Palin could really exploit this situation and crack it wide open. I don't think the Tea Party even realizes the significance of the polarization they're promoting.

The media is at it again adding fuel to the fire to the building of the Mosque at Ground Zero. Not that these incidents are not wrong but they do not help keep the violence down. Fair or Not Fair I still think that if I had control of easing this violence that builds more each day I would build the Mosque some where else.

I didn't see anyone on the video say, "I want to build a mosque near Ground Zero." So don't build it.

I believe America is a home for all good people. I believe in equality and justice for all citizens. I believe in freedom of speech and freedom of religion. I believe in treating people as individuals and with respect, until they prove that respect or trust is not deserved. BUT! Based on actions and words from the Islamic peoples, I cannot fully trust them. I feel lied to. I think the Islamic agenda is to take over the U.S. and install Sharia Law. The words and actions of this video and the Imam in NYC convince me further that these people and this religion is not what it wants us to think it is. We need to resist their deception and stand ready to defend America values. If we fail, they will conquer us and impose their beliefs upon all of us.

Think for yourself dude. As a Christian I would say terrorists attacked us, not Islam. Those men were no more representative of Islam than the slave holders in this counry were of Chrisitianity. America has a history of racism and injustice. We just finished attacking Iraq for no reason at all. America needs to recognize that our values can't be arbitrary just because we're fearful.

RESPECT!!!! THAT IS THE NAME OF THE GAME. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE BUILDING OF ANOTHER MOSQUE, BUT I DO THINK IT SHOULD BE BUILT SOMEWHERE ELSE. ALL I ASK IS THAT THEY RESPECT OUR DEAD AS THEY WOULD EXPECT US TO RESPECT THERES. THE BUILDING OF THE MOSQUE NEAR GROUND ZERO SHOWS NO RESPECT OR CLASS. THIS COUNTRY AND HER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH PAIN WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER SLAP IN THE FACE.
