John Boehner Cautions GOP Against Overconfidence in Midterm Elections

With confidence growing almost daily in Republican ranks, House Minority Leader John Boehner tried to tamp down expectations Monday, saying his party still faced an "uphill climb" in the battle to regain control of the House of Representatives.

On Fox News' Sean Hannity show, the Ohio congressman offered measure optimism about the November midterm elections. "We've got real opportunity," he said. ". . . I can tell that the American people want change, and they want it now."

But with a Gallup poll showing the GOP with a 10-point advantage on a generic congressional ballot, he also cautioned that "all the polls don't win elections," The Hill newspaper reported. Republicans would have to win 39 seats to turn the advantage their way in the House. In April, Boehner seemed to suggest the GOP could win as many as 100 seats in November -- at least that many were in play, he said.

Boehner planned a major foreign policy speech on Tuesday -- the same day President Obama addresses the nation on Iraq -- in Milwaukee, where he'll speak at the American Legion national convention.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

They'll win the House but not the Senate. And they don't stand a chance against Obama in 2012. As unpopular as Obama is becoming, the Republicans still only have twits like Gingrich, Palin, Huckabuck, etc. Let them have the House, it will sake their frenzied blood lust somewhat and it makes Obama's job a lot easier. Once the Republicans get a stake in things, they have no choice but to play ball again, and thus Obama's job becomes easier.

We all know what the Republicans are against, anything that the Pres. wants, but they refuse to tell us what they are for. This morning one Republican on a talk show was asked what they were for and he answered they were going to listen to the voters during this recess and then announce what they are for just before the election. Peter King (R-NY. said a few weeks ago they had a plan but would not reveal it yet because if they did the media would start asking questions and the Republicans didn't want that. The Republicans will promise everthing to try and get elected but will only give tax breaks to the rich and stop regulations on Wall Street so they can go back to doing what they did to destroy the economy of the country.

Unfortunately Boehner is probably correct. While Republicans are sitting home on Nov. 2nd saying "we got it in the bag so I'm not going to vote," the unions will be dragging people off the street and threatening them if they don't vote for their progressive socialist brothers.
