John Hickenlooper Still Leads Colorado Governor Race, But More Are Undecided

Democrat John Hickenlooper still has a healthy lead in the three-way race for Colorado governor, but more voters have moved into the undecided column, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Aug. 29.

Hickenlooper gets 36 percent of the vote compared to 24 percent for Republican businessman Dan Maes and 14 percent for former GOP Rep. Tom Tancredo, who is running as a third party candidate.

But those numbers represent a drop in support for all three compared to Rasmussen's Aug. 11 poll, while the number Rasmussen has for undecideds has gone up from 5 percent to 20 percent.

In the previous poll, Hickenlooper led Maes by 43 percent to 31 percent with 18 percent for Tancredo.

When "leaners" are included -- those voters who didn't express an initial preference but were pressed to make a choice -- Hickenlooper's margin narrows to 40 percent to 32 percent over Maes, with 9 percent for Tancredo, 2 percent for some other candidate and 16 percent undecided.

The number of voters who see each candidate "very" favorably has also slipped: for Hickenlooper, from 35 percent to 29 percent; for Maes, from 12 percent to 7 percent; and, for Tancredo, from 14 percent to 10 percent.

Maes' support among fellow Republicans has fallen from 59 percent to 45 percent since the last poll, while Tancredo's has dropped form 25 percent to 17 percent.

Tancredo, who rejected calls by Maes to step aside after Maes won the GOP primary, repeated Saturday that he can't support the GOP nominee and intended to stay in the race as the candidate of the American Constitution Party, according to the Grand Junction Sentinel.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Another 3rd party candidate who hasn't a chance and just ends up being a spoiler. When will they learn. If he is truly for a 'constitution party', he would further his cause by dropping out & supporting the GOP. It takes a big ego & a warped sense of reality to stay in a race with support in the teens.

Would someone else please enter the race. I cannot vote for any of these lackluster candidates.

Hopefully the voters in Colorado are finally seeing the true colors of Hickenlooper. Many of my friends live in the Denver area, where he is the current mayor (Denver), and he has done little if anything to endear himself with people who live there. He has repeatedly fought for fewer police officers and firemen on the streets. Rather than using tax payers money for these first responders, he has spent million(s) on art work in homeless shelters and on various statuary/art projects in the city. While I am all for the fine arts, perhaps he could have used the money in this economic crisis to, pay the first responders rather than lay them off. And, although he is a Democrat and I am a Democrat, it pains me to say he should not be the governor of Colorado.
