Rudy Giuliani's Daughter Avoids Prosecution in Shoplifting Case

The 21-year-old daughter of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, charged with shoplifting $100 worth of beauty items from a high-end cosmetics store, has apparently avoided prosecution in Manhattan Criminal Court.

The case against Caroline Giuliani was adjourned in contemplation of dismissal -- that is, sealed and closed as long as the young woman keeps her nose clean and completes a day of community service work. "Stay out of trouble and avoid rearrest," Judge Jennifer Schecter told her.

The Harvard University student did not speak to reporters and was escorted out of the Lower Manhattan courtroom by her mother, Donna Hanover, the Associated Press said . They got into a waiting Hyundai SUV.
Caroline Giuliani, daughter of former New York Mayor Rudy GiulianiCaroline Giuliani was arrested on a misdemeanor charge after she was seen on a security video on Aug. 4 at Sephora in Manhattan. The store is part of Paris-based LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, a luxury goods outfit.

Rudy Giuliani wasn't at his daughter's court appearance. He was known during his time as mayor for a crackdown on petty crime -- the "broken windows" theory of law enforcement -- a policy credited with improving the quality of life in New York. When he first ran for president as a Republican in 2007, Caroline Giuliani showed up listed as a member of Barack Obama's Facebook group, supporting the Democrat's candidacy. She left the group when questioned about it, and then didn't comment on the presidential race.

Her mother, Ms. Hanover, went through a messy divorce with Giuliani while he was mayor.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. If it was someone elses daughter they would of paid fines probation and more than a day of comm. service. A clear case of different rules for different folks

I wonder if Rudy would have approved of this had it been someone else's child, especially if that was the child of a high profile Democrat. I wonder what he had to do to get the case dismissed. I wonder how many times he invoked 9/11?

It's a shame that she did not get a stiffer penalty. Of course, her father's name and status figured into the result. This is most likely a very confused young woman, who was damaged by her father's treatment of her mother....which, of course, is not an excuse for her actions, nor should excuse any punishment. She needed more of an admonishment and some intense therapy thrown in for good measure. Good ol dad Rudi is just one of the long line of 'family values', conservative, moral (tongue in cheek) politicians (on both sides of the aisle) who love to preach their rhetoric to those of us in the 'masses' while living their lives in total contradiction to all they espouse (in public)....think here Gingrich, Stanford, Edwards, etc....it's a very long list, unfortunately. Are there any honest/moral politicians left? Perhaps when 'Mr. Smith' left Washington, they all followed?

Well she sure learned her lesson didn't she.Her dad built a reputation on fighting crime and putting criminals behind bars.I guess that standard doesn't apply to his family. I wonder how many other store owners have had to suffer losses because of the poor parenting job he and his wife have done.

Gee, why am I not surprised at all?, politicians, actors, the rich and famous can get away with murder, no matter what they do, they have the green light to keep doing anything they want, money will wash their names, but God forbid to a regular citizen to do something then they ruin their records where they can't get a job ever in their lives because they tag them for life, or God forbid if someone steals food, they wll be ruined for life too, how unfair our laws are

Question: Is Carolines circumstance in this case normal proceedure for this court concerning adults arrested on a first offense misdemeanor shoplifting charge? Or is it just normal proceedure for THIS Judge to typically rule this way on cases of this type that come before her? Someone (hmm, perhaps an investgative reporter, hmm) should check if this is the norm or not. If it is the norm then Justice is served. If it is not the norm than Justice is Corrupt. Is this a fair enough question to persue?

yes, the USA is getting as bad as other countries, if they have money, they can get away with murder, if they are stars and famous, they can also get away for murder, but if a regular hungry individual steals food, then they put him in jail and throw away the key, how sad our government is selling this way, they have the green light to kill, drive drunk, get drugs, anything goes for them, but god fobide a regular person, then they ruin their reputation so they could never get a descent job again
