Ethics Office Recommends Probe of Congressmen in Financial Reform Matter

Two Republican lawmakers and one Democrat could face a House ethics investigation over complaints about fundraising events they held in close proximity to votes on a Wall Street financial reform bill last year.

The independent Office of Congressional Ethics found enough evidence of wrongdoing in the cases of Reps. John Campbell (R-Calif.), Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) and Tom Price (R-Ga.) to recommend the matter for a formal investigation, the
New York Times reported Tuesday. The preliminary probe focused on House members who raised money from lobbyists or executives opposed to the overhaul of government oversight of investment banks and financial houses when the bill came to a vote in December 2009.

Joe Crowley, ethics probeEach of the congressmen criticized the ethics office's recommendation. Crowley, who attended a fundraising event at the home of a lobbyist the same night that he voted against a series of amendments requiring more openness in certain Wall Street trades, "complied with the letter and spirit of all rules regarding fundraising and standards of conduct," his office said.

Crowley, who is in his sixth term, eventually voted for the reform legislation, while Campbell and Price voted against it. Price said in a statement that it was "truly a mystery" to him how the ethics office arrived at its recommendation. "There being no evidence of any wrongdoing or any inconsistency in my policy position, one can only guess as to the motive behind their decision or even why they chose to initiative a review in the first place."

The case now goes to the bipartisan Committee on Standards of Official Conduct. The group generally meets in secret and it could be months before it makes a public utterance about any findings. As always, the challenge is the difficulty of proving a quid pro quo -- directly linking the acceptance of a contribution to a specific act by a lawmaker.

The ethics office recommended dismissing investigations of five other House members: Reps. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), Christopher Lee (R-N.Y.), Frank Lucas (R-Okla.), Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.) and Melvin Watt (D-N.C.).

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Instead of just doing polls asking voters to give their approval rating of congress (which was about 23%). They need to ask voters how honest they feel congress is. I have a feeling it's much lower than 23%. Then there needs to be some real choices for us voters. It's too expensive to run for office so the honest people can't afford it. Just like it should be illegal to have a lobbyist. Most lobbyists are former congressmen or potential congressmen. This is just legalized bribery! Most if not all congressmen are multimillionaires. They didn't start out that way. But just like Barrack, within a few short years of bribes they are very wealthy on a salary that doesn't pay near that amount. It's not just one party, it's ALL of them! It's disgusting and I think and hope all of us Americans are fed up with it. Lets get people in there that will make some positive changes!

Robsphase I totally agree with you. AND once the honest person is in there, what's to prevent him/her from skipping to the "sleazey trail"? I do think many of these so called "representatives" of the people entered the political field with good intentions. BUT, once there, the power, greed and other perks pushed them to the dark side. Let's push for term limits for these people that want to "represent" us AND let their salaries be voted on by WE THE PEOPLE. Once they've completed their terms, theirs pensions are based on what they've done. These clowns right now, can serve ONE term and they get a life time pension !!! This is nuts. They pass legislation that they can exclude themselves from. What's the incentive???? Go total medicare and use the same supplementals that we mere mortals do AND social security. Watch medicare and social security be revitalized very fast??? This is the worset career right now. It is a breeding ground for crooks, mobsters, and .... I can't find enough vile adjectives for this group of pukes.

This is only one example why we need to throw all incumbents out of office as they have sold our country into economic slavery and robbed us blind. Remember in November both parties are equally guilty and any incumbent needs to be banned from any position of trust. We also need term limitations on all of those that serve public office rather than themselves.

Just because a person is anti-republican does not make him a liberal. If you brainwashed ditto heads would close your ears and open your eyes, you could see the crooks in your own party for what they are. The Defense Industry is the biggest, most obvious welfare plan ever conceived, and you can't see it. You blame everything on people and groups that have no power, and excuse those making the decisions. You need to get smarter. Your party must have a war every 10 years so your representatives keep getting their payoffs. Of course, we have to replenish all those used up weapons for an organization that never shows a profit or makes anything a citizen can buy. But it's "good for business." And the Catholics keep voting for you because you kill adults, not unborn. What a bunch of sickos!

Dear Sirs; Barney Franks was ahead(chairman) of a committee to help clear things up back in March 10, 2008. After the committee broke up Barney Franks said to the people asking questions that the Up-tick Rule would be re-instated in 30 days. Well Golden Sacs and other hedge funds short, and over-whelmingly shorts some more That it would over-whelm the put/call ratio so that it could do nothing but go down. They couldn't lose. What needs to be investigated is How anyone got Chris Cox to get rid of the UP-Tick Rule so the shorts could do this(Bear raids) to make the easy money. How much did they(whomever)pay Christopher Cox to get rid of it.

I'm not saying that they absolutely didn't do anything wrong, however it did say and I'm sure everyone will agree that thier position had already been publicly stated that they were against that particular bill and going to the fundraisers didn't change thier position. What the ethics committee has to prove is there was a "quid pro quo". In other words they changed thier vote and in return received campaign contributions. And to my recollection probably the only Republican congressmen or sentators that would likely have voted for the bill, would have been Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and I don't think that even they voted for it. It doesn't seem that the Democrat changed his vote or stance on the bill either and I say that as someone that can't stand Democrats! They need to stop wasting taxpayer's money and go after Maxine Waters and Charlie Rangle, because there's plenty of evidence that they did violate not only congressional rules but they also broke a number of banking, housing and tax laws! And while we're on the subject. What about all the pork that is attached to each bill and the money that was promised to different Congressmen so they would vote for the healthcare bill? That in it's self should be illegal!!!!! But, both sides do it and it should stop! If your going to write a bill, then fund that bill and there shouldn't be anything, no tit mouse, owls or any other crap attached to it!

That is why we need to clean house and hope that who ever takes their place learns from the previous house members if they want to keep their jobs. That goes for Republicans and Democrats

It seems we need to CLEAN HOUSE and start at the top. Until we do that Washington will never get the message. Lobbyists should be outlawed it is another word for bribes.
