Gov. Tim Pawlenty to Accept Medicaid Money, but not Funds for 'Obamacare'

The same week Tim Pawlenty signed an executive order preventing Minnesota from accepting grant money available under the new health care law, the governor said he would accept $263 million in federal funding for state's Medicaid program.

Despite earlier describing the Medicaid money as a "bailout" of the states, Pawlenty said Wednesday that he would take the funds because it is "not Obamacare" and won't "further some stupid policy agenda," ThinkProgress reported.

In an interview with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the governor said, "We're going to take the money for those things that we were going to do anyhow and for the Medicaid (money), we were going to do that anyhow."

Pawlenty went on to tell the newspaper that Minnesota sends more money to Washington than it gets back, so "where it's appropriate and where it's wise and doesn't further some stupid policy agenda or otherwise concerns us or sign us up for something that is unsustainable or otherwise cause us a problem, we're going to apply for those other pots of money."

On Tuesday
Pawlenty signed an order directing state agencies to not apply for grants available in the health care legislation, calling it "an intrusion by the federal government."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Well let us all take a look at the repub. hypocrisy. By the way all I will write unlike a lot of other posts can be fact checked to see the truth.Gov. Brewer of AK has strong ties to the private prison group that will greatly benefit if the illegal immigrant law goes in to effect. She refuses to answer any questions regsrding this matter and her campaign pulled all of its ads from the local CBS affiliate who is investigating this story. That came directly from her campaign manager. Did you hear Beck with all his phony passion saying how he went into the national archives and held Washington's innaugural speech in his hands. Well it turns out it was just another Beck lie as the director of the archives says that never happened. But you Beckies keep dinking the Kool Aid. Seven of the states that are suing the Fed. Gov. over the health care law have now accepted funds from the new law which will help the states fund people who cannot afford health care. Finally check and see how many of the repubs. decried the stim plan but when the money came to help their states there the repubs. were with over sized checks and they try to take the credit for the money helping their state. Please people, vote for whomever you like but make sure you realize exactly what agendas you are voting for.Next time you see a politician yell about less fed gov., which is ridiculous as people are much more affected by local and state govs. rather than the fed, ask them and less taxes just ask them what they would cut where they would cut taxes. Seems people like to scream change but give no ideas about that change.

Tim Pawlenty, of Minnesota, will not accept money coming from the new health plan, because he calls it stupid legislation. This money would be used to help needy peple with the cost of their health care Mr. Pawlenty would not have any problem if this money from the Federal government were to be used for additional tax cuts for the rich What a hypocrite. People vote for these guys. If they do, they deserve what they get
