Illegal Immigrant Population and Influx of New Arrivals Has Fallen, Study Says

The annual influx of unauthorized immigrants dropped sharply in the period between March 2007 and March 2009, representing the first significant reversal in the growth of the population of illegals in two decades, according to an analysis of Census data by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The average inflow for the 2007-2009 period of all unauthorized immigrants was 300,000 compared to 550,000 from March 2005 to March 2007. In the first half of the decade, March 2000 to March 2005, the average annual inflow was 850,000.

The result has been an eight percent reduction in the number of unauthorized immigrants currently living in the U.S., from a peak of 12 million in March 2007 to 11.1 million in March 2009, Pew said.

However, Pew noted that current number was still significantly larger than in 2000 when it was 8.4 million.

There has also been a drop or leveling-off in the number of unauthorized immigrants who have been the biggest focus of the current immigration debate -- those coming from Mexico and Latin American countries.

Pew said that the unauthorized Mexico population in the U.S. which accounts for roughly 60 percent of all illegals, peaked in 2007 has since leveled off. The number of those illegal immigrants from Mexico newly arriving in the U.S. dropped to an average of 150,000 annually compared to an average of 500,000 a year between 2000 and 2005.

However, with 6.7 million unauthorized Mexican immigrants still in the country, Pew said there is "no evidence of a recent increase in the number of Mexican-born migrants returning home from the U.S." despite "major shifts in the level of immigration enforcement and in enforcement strategies."

The population of unauthorized immigrants from Latin American countries other than Mexico has declined by 22 percent between 2007 and 2009, according to Pew.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Interesting article--three points to make: 1) Political Correctness attained anew level. The article references 'unauthorized immigrants.' We used to refer to them as 'illegal aliens.'---illegal because they are here illegally, but I suspect that is too harsh. Unauthorized is so much softer. And aliens because they are not of this country, but I guess immigrants is a nicer term. 2) The ACLU has always fought for the rights of citizens (often minority populations) that faced discrimation when attempting to assert their rights under our Constitution. Illegal aliens do not have the rights of citizens! 3) Finally, and the most disturbing to me--the Federal Government actively prosecutes companies who employ illegal aliens. Many comments are aimed at businesses that employ illegal aliens. The conclusion is that illegal aliens would not come to America if jobs were not available. The Federal Government is suing Arizona for adopting a tough enforcement policy but has failed to protect our borders. If the Federal Government did what it claims is their job to do, the illegal population would not exist. Further, government at all levels provides cover for illegal aliens--the Federal Goverment as mentioned above, the State of Washington issues Driver's licenses with no proof of legal status required. Seattle and many other cities is a Sanctuary City, providing housing and food and health care and free legal services to illegal aliens. I ask you--if it is illegal for the private sector to provide jobs, why is it not illegal for our government to offer legal protection, legal ID, food, housing and health care to illegal aliens. It seems substantially fewer illegal aliens would find it attractive to sneak across our borders if there was no hope of getting housing, food, health care and legal ID without first proving legal status. Just a question.........

Like I've always said, if the jobs dry up so will the illegals. Fewer illegals means more jobs for American citizens...

Of course the influx of illegals has slowed. There are no jobs for them. It's not due to anything Obama's administration has done. He would welcome them with open arms as they are potential Democrat voters.

"The population of unauthorized immigrants from Latin American countries other than Mexico has declined by 22 percent between 2007 and 2009, according to Pew." My, my, it appears the decline happened about the time the Democrats got back in. Amazing, isn't it? We repudiate, and not "refudiate" all claims by the right. And we provide the truth. It's now up to them to come clean. Beck and Palin's call to you was to return to God. No more bearing of false witness (modern: just lying for the sake of lying). Enough is enough.

If this were true , we would not be spending 355 bilion a year to school , feed , and give medical care and free rent to Illegal Aliens. A couple of thousand might be staying in Mexico to work at the new 500,000,000 GM plant that bail out money is being used to build in Mexico. Seems no matter which side of the border they are on....they cost American tax payers big , and contribute absolutely zero to our country.

Rationally, if you legalize the products the drug cartels are selling and then tax it, you then address several problems at once. revenue to the state savings to the states...less prison population. less crime...no profit for drug cartels. California is already doing it by their "medical Marijuana scam" the northern California dope industry is hurting because the prices are coming down. Hey, it's not like the war on drugs is working!!

If we know how many illegals are coming, why aren't they sent back. This sounds like more liberal propaganda. A sure way to end the entrance of all illegals except drug dealers is to quite making tax payers support them. If we didn't feed, clothe, give them housing, etc., they'd have no desire to be here. To say we can't afford to deport them is ludicrous. What we can't afford is to keep them here.

The pew Hispanic center looks like need a lesson in math. They are talking about illegals in thousands, where the real numbers are in millions. Who are they trying to fool? This country has at least 20 million illegals if not more, majority from Mexico & Latin America & they should all be thrown out no matter waht because thay are changinbg the face of this country & we all have had enough not mentioning the cost that the tax payer has to bear for all their freebies. Enough is enough!! No amnesty whatsoever!! No automatic citizenship for their kids born here either & the senate & congress have to change that law because that's why they keep producing like rats becuase the birth in this country makes them American Citizes. How stupid our politician & the whole government system in this counntry has become, how weak have we become that we can not even deal with bunch of unskileed, uneducated law breakers & they are milking this country to heell & back & the Mexican government loves it & why not? They are dumping all their unemployed, unskilled, sick & criminals in our country & it's about time we start taking some serious action to remedy this huge problem so that we can claim America, our culture & our language back. Enough said!!

"because thay are changinbg the face of this country" Wow. Just ... wow. So, you don't like someone with a different "face." I realize you are a bigot and hate people who are non-white but can you please keep that sort of disgusting crap to yourself? Yes, we have an illegal immigrant population but as long as most of them have been here, they HAVE been paying into Social Security and paying taxes and contributing to the economy. They just don't get the benefits from it. Also, as long as they have been here, their children, grandchildren, etc. are CITIZENS, no matter how much you bigots want to change the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, something you right-wingers love to throw in the face of everyone all the time as the be-all and end-all of what we have to protect. But only if it falls into your bigoted line ehh? Pathetic.

Go check the web for sites that show the hidden cams on the borders and you will see for yourself that the number of illegals entering has not dropped at all. The actual number of illegals in the country is 20 million...not 3 as they claim and the reason they are trying to once again deceive American citizens is because if they told you the truth that there are 20 million here and they are still entering each and every day you would never go along with the amnesty they plan to give them which they now call immigration reform...wake up people...20 million illegals versus over 15 million unemployed american citizens of all colors!
