Beam him up, Scotty! James A. Traficant, the wild-haired ex-convict who was ousted from Congress in 2002, has qualified for the ballot in Ohio and will run for his old U.S. House seat as an independent.

The Trumbull County Board of Elections ruled Wednesday that Traficant -- bell-bottom pants, cowboy boots, distinctive toupee, and all -- is good to go in Ohio's 17th District, encompassing Youngstown and parts of Akron. He rounded up 2,154 valid signatures, 11 more than he needed, the Associated Press reported.
Former Rep. James Traficant, running for Congress again in Ohio
Released from prison last year after serving seven years for bribery and other corruption-related charges, Traficant was disqualified from the ballot in July when his petition was thrown out for invalid signatures. But he didn't give up the fight. Trumbull Board Director Kelly Pallante says other election boards in the northeastern Ohio district will be notified to put his name on the ballot, the AP said.

During his last term in the House, Traficant became estranged from the Democratic Party and this summer he spoke at Tea Party events in Ohio. But he said Wednesday that the Tea Party looks "like they've joined the Republicans at this point."

The onetime Mahoning County sheriff -- he was accused of taking a bribe back in the 1980s but beat the rap -- served 17 years in Congress, most of the time as a Democrat with strong populist leanings. He is challenging his successor, Rep. Tim Ryan (D), and Republican Jim Graham.

"I've got no money," he said of the impending campaign. "They've got me painted as Darth Vader." That's a "Star Wars" reference; in Congress Traficant favored "Star Trek," often ending his colorful one-minute speeches with the phrase "Beam me up."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

i am a retiree from Packard Electric better known as Delphi in Warren, Ohio. Wonder if Gm is going to give us our good insurance back now that they are bringing in big bucks again. We worked for them for 30 yrs and gave them our time and most of us our health but they do not care about that. We do care because we are older now and need the drs and medicines that we pay for mostly out of our pockets. The generic ins is a joke. I think we deserve to be taken care of, after all didnt we take care of them thank you

GOOD! This guy was railroaded just like Blago in Chicago. He wouldn't play the game the way the others did and kiss up to the powers in charge so they ratted him out for doing the same things THEY ALL DO as a way of getting rid of him. An old Japanese saying goes: The Nail That Stands Up, Gets Hammered Down!

Where else could Traficant find medical care for life, paid for by the American taxpayers? Or a huge salary with lifetime retirement benefits? Why look for a REAL JOB when you can go on the public dole and virtually do nothing and come out with millions, book deals, speaking engagements, free travel, free postage, staff in 2-8 offices across the state and be proudly "respected" again? Hopefully the good folks in Ohio vote smarter.

I believe that once a person has been punished for their misdeeds such as he did by going to prison they have paid their debt to society and they are even on the scoreboard. However those persons have demonstrated what their true credentials are. I pity Ohio with their burden already of Boehner! That plus the fact that Kasich has a good chance to become governor after he demonstrated his lack of financial responsibility when he participated in shutting the federal government down during the Clinton administration costing the taxpayers untold millions needlessly. Trafficant should fit right in with that scheme of things.
