GOP Wave Means Voters Are 'Spoiled Brats'?

I was on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Friday, and one of the many interesting topics we discussed was Eugene Robinson's Washington Post column, "The Spoiled-Brat American Electorate."

If you haven't read it yet, here's an excerpt:
"Voters appear to be so fed up with the Democrats that they're ready to toss them out in favor of the Republicans -- for whom, according to those same polls, the nation has even greater contempt. This isn't an "electoral wave," it's a temper tantrum.

"... In the punditry business, it's considered bad form to question the essential wisdom of the American people. But at this point, it's impossible to ignore the obvious: The American people are acting like a bunch of spoiled brats."
Robinson stresses that his argument is not "partisan," but one can't help but notice the convenient timing: Now that voters are swinging to the Republicans, they are throwing a "temper tantrum." (One wonders whether they were throwing a similar tantrum when they got fed up with Bush and voted in Barack Obama?) ...

Regardless of where you come down on this argument, Robinson has written a thought-provoking column, and it spawned an interesting debate.

Update: Several folks have reminded me of this line from Peter Jennings in 1994:
Some thoughts on those angry voters. Ask parents of any two-year-old and they can tell you about those temper tantrums: the stomping feet, the rolling eyes, the screaming ...

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Ironically, Robinson's remark is typical of the sort of holier than thou ivory tower snobbery that really does cause people to vote Republican. Personally I don't intend to vote for any Republicans or Democrats. My 2010 vote will go to Independent candidates only. Time now for a REAL change.

If none of the above was on the ballot, it would win hands down every time. Incumbents are a scourge and preventing our country from being on top of things.

Many so called Republicans, like myself are those that don't live beyond their means, stay within a budget, have worked decades for the things I do have, and have never taken a dime of government money to help me with anything. The truth is, and I researched it, 38% of people on welfare are white, 37% are black(who make up only 12% of the population), and then there are the thousands of illegals that are mostly Democrats who are the fastest growing population in the country, and they are starting to draing our social programs as well. Most republicans are good, decent hard working American citizens, but we are looked down upon because we have been successful. We are all taught to strive for success, and now you want to hold it against us. Maybe people who struggle should take a long look in the mirror and try to take some of the blame themselves for making bad decisions in their lives. Turn it around and start making better decisions, and you can have the same success. It takes time, and you must remain diligent, but it can happen.

Most democrats are good, decent hard working American citizens too! My wife and I have a house that's paid for. We worked decades for all the things we have. We're both liberal democrats. Despite our "success," we both recognize that not everyone will be so fortunate and blessed! We have winners in the world BECAUSE we also have losers. (Note: Be thankful and grateful for the losers!) How we treat the downtrodden and the less fortunate says a lot about the kind of people we are. Some on the right haven't learned that lesson yet. Even if everyone goes out and gets a doctorate, someone will still have to pick up the garbage, someone will still have to serve me in restaurant, clean up after my night's stay in a motel room, and cash me out in a grocery store. "Success" is sometimes elusive even for those who strive to be better and work very hard.

John and Beth, I do not agree with you. Most people can make something of themselves sans handouts. I am white. My sister fell on hard times and couldn't qualify for food stamps because..GET THIS..she was working (just slightly above their random "poverty" level). She could not get any help from the state, so what she did was to find a way. She created a small business that helped out. SO yanno...if most of these lazy dwellers would get off their backsides and WORK toward bettering themselves, we wouldn't have half the problems we have now. I have to say that some folks do need help but where I live, the majority are just lazy. And I think they should have random weekly drug tests to get welfare. At least up here that is what I think should happen. If I have to be clear of drugs to hold a job to pay for these lazy people's welfare checks, they have the duty to be free of drugs to get those funds.

There is no doubt American voters are spoiled brats. They want free government services, a world-wide military empire, the best of everything, and they don't want to pay for anything. If previous generations of Americans were like this one, we would be a Third World country. And if things stay as they are, we soon will be.

Mr. Robinson is right-on. We have expected everything to be painless. We were told the war in Iraq would be painless, recovery would be painless, no sacrifice required. Well, the rooster has now come home to roost...we will be forced to make tough choices, and most of our cushy little lives will be thrown upside down. Too bad - we deserve what we get...sacrifices across the board (milatary, entitlements, tax policy) will have to be made.

When ever we lose some of our freedoms, are forced to pay more in taxes, are forced to pay for illegal immigrants; schooling, healthcare, social security, etc, are forced to see our countries wealth, strength and uniqueness squandared by the "elites" ,be they democrats or republicans...then the American people should be throwing a "tantrum" as you call it.

Layne is absolutely right, but missing one word. Illegal immigrants do not get social security, welfare, medicare, or any other FEDERAL government program. States are left to decide whether to provide services out of their own pocket. Know your history: Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, 1996.

Without the tantrum, we would have had a Hillary Clinton - John McCain race in 2008 ... with no Sarah Palin in the mix.
