A debate scheduled for Sunday's "Meet the Press" between Florida Senate candidates Marco Rubio and Kendrick Meek has been postponed because of Rubio's father's ailing health.

Rubio's campaign spokesman Alex Burgos said in a statement Friday that Mario Rubio "has significantly deteriorated in the last 48 hours." The 83-year-old suffers from emphysema and lung cancer.

Burgos said the campaign has informed NBC and Meek "and appreciate their understanding and kind words for the Rubio family during this difficult period."

In a statement, NBC said its "thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Rubio and his family during this time and we look forward to rescheduling the debate at a later date to be announced."

Former Gov. Charlie Crist, the independent candidate, declined to participate in the debate.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

For an 83 yr old with lung cancer and emphysema, suffering is an understatement. May God ease their pain. Best wishes for Marco's Dad, family, and friends.

I would postpone too. My mother is in her middle 80's, if anything were to happen I would be there. A parent comes first.
