Obama Vows to Fight for Middle Class, Says Group's Taken 'Hard Shots'

President Barack Obama said Saturday that economic recovery means more than a "healthy stock market," but also a return to bustling Main streets and a prosperous middle class -- a group that took some hard shots "long before this recession hit."

Labor Day, the president said in his weekly Internet and radio address is a time to "throw some food on the grill and have a good time. But it is also a day to honor the American worker -- to reaffirm our commitment to the great American middle class that has, for generations, made our economy the envy of the world."
President Barack Obama, September 2010
With an unemployment rate stuck at 9.6 percent, Obama said his administration is "doing everything we can to accelerate job creation." Investments in roads and bridges, action to prevent layoffs of teachers and safety forces, tax cuts and loans for small businesses have stopped "the bleeding," he said. Referring to a small business jobs bill before the Senate, Obama said he was "fighting to pass a law to provide tax breaks to the folks who create jobs right here in America."

Obama was to spend Saturday and Sunday at Camp David, the presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains. On Monday, the president plans to attend a "Laborfest" in Milwaukee, while Vice President Joe Biden visits Toledo for a Labor Day event with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland. Obama will be in Cleveland on Wednesday where he is expected to announce new proposals for boosting employment and the economy. The attention given to Ohio is no accident. The state is still seen as a barometer of the political mood in middle America. Wednesday' s trip wiill mark Obama's seventh visit to Ohio this year and ninth since his 2009 inauguration.

Republicans, in their weekly address, criticized government rules and regulations that they said impede job creation. "The more time small-business owners spend pushing paper, the less time they have to focus on creating jobs," said Rep. Geoff Davis (R-Ky.).

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. What happened with the first 'stimulus' $$$$$Billions-In-Funds? Don't we recall a big percentage was for road, highway, bridge, rail work? So far, we have paid (we, the US tax-payers) for the new GM plant in Mexico. Maybe the idea is 'Reverse Illegal Immigration." We will have to climb over to Mexico, to get a job. Obama is on Noaha's Ark with out a paddle.

Those of you that are defending the republicans for not voting for extended unemployment benefit because they wanted it paid for?? Well I just wonder why they are voting yes on extending the tax cuts for the wealthy that they don't pay for. They didn't pay for them when they gave them to wealthy in the first place. Add that into the garbage they left for Obama to clean up.

I cannot believe the people on here feeling sorry for the wealthy. Are you kidding me???? The companies could be hiring now but they still got to make sure they have enough to give those CEO's bonuses.

Nobody is demanding anything for the rich, it is time to pay their fair share. When a teacher and police have a higher tax burden that a millionaire that is not even fair. The wealthy get tons of tax credits on investment (that most of us don't have extra to invest in.) The amount of money left over out of their check and someone making under 200,000 is a huge percentage higher. They need to pay their fair share.

He has said this many times, yet consistently acted contrarily. When this man pledges "laser focus" on an issue, rest assured it will be buried in neglect. Examples: taxes, wars, regulatory reform, health care cost reductions, entitlement reform, energy policy, on and on infinitum. One and done.

This coming from the administration that allowed Government Motors to start building there new 500.000.000 plant in Mexico using unpaid bailout funds...ie our tax dollars. How many jobs were saved or created by allowing this to happen?

This is not about the wealthy. They've not asked for more money. The wealthy hire people to work. If the middle class, lower middle class or poverty stricken need more money, they can go get a job or maybe two jobs and stop expecting the federal government to take care of them.

Lets see, more tax cuts for the wealthy and more wars for the middle class and poor to fight and die in. Sounds fair to me.

At least Bush was fair and gave all middle class people a stimulus check. Instead Obama wants to pick for himself who deserves help. He seems to have a problem understanding that he it the President of all the people, not just unions workers and democrats.

TO: barney...You are right about "Bush" only to the extent that everyone got a rebate. But the size of the rebates for the middle class were small compared to what the upper crust got. Additionally, about 1/3 of the Obama stimulus involved tax breaks that targeted the middle class. Aside from Clinton's 8 yrs. what has happened across the last 30 is that the gap between the super-rich and the rich has widened, as has the gap between the rich and the merely affluent. This massive redistribution of wealth has been paid for by the middle class and the working poor. Obama has it exactly right - the middle class needs to be re-built.
