Democrats Trying to Build Firewall Around Strongest Candidates to Hold Off GOP

Fearing the real possibility that they may lose control of the House, Democratic leaders plan to winnow the races into which they will pour money in hopes of building a firewall around candidates who are in the best positions to hold their seats, The New York Times reports.

The Times says that strategists will do a "brutal triage," which will result in redirecting resources from districts that are slipping beyond reach to about two dozen where the odds for victory are best.

Races that are believed to have particularly vulnerable Democrats include those of newcomers who won Republican seats during the last two pro-Democratic election cycles -- like Betsey Markey of Colorado, Tom Perriello of Virginia, Mary Jo Kilroy of Ohio and Frank Kratovil Jr. of Maryland -- as well as more senior members, like John Spratt of South Carolina and Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota, according to the Times.
John Spratt
Spratt, the senior member of South Carolina's House delegation with 28 years in Congress, is facing "the fight of his political life" in a district where, at another time, he might have been "just another powerful incumbent cruising to easy re-election," according to The State (Columbia., S.C.) newspaper.

The paper said his Republican opponent, state Sen. Michael Mulvaney, has tapped into a "palpable anger" over the long economic downturn, the loss of jobs and deep skepticism about the bank bailouts, federal stimulus package and health care reform.

The Republicans need to pick up 39 seats to win control of the House. The Times reported that Democratic leaders acknowledge that about 20 seats are already probably lost.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Democratic Party chairman Tim Kaine acknowledged that the polls "are challenging right now" for Democrats.

On the same program, Republican Sen. John McCain said that this year's midterms could be a "seismic election." But noting that "when you look at the approval ratings of (congressional) Republicans, they're just as bad as Democrats," McCain said Republicans have to come up with an agenda "to give Americans a reason to be for us rather than be just against the Democrats and the president."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. The US is not now a developing nation. This Nation "peaked out" in the years during and after WWII following the last Great Depression. We have a nation regressing into conditions, which are not desirable. Our workers' wages and benefits are on the trend of equalizing with the developing "third world" low monetary value countries such as China, while at the same time; "our cost of living" has been increasing. Has anybody heard where China stands as an industrial country? If the Republicans by chance got back in power and the country did fall into a "great depression," what plans or agendas do President Obama’s opponents have in mind for getting the Nation’s “strength” back, if they only want to continue with the same policies, which got this country into this 2007 recession? SO, how will we get the Nation out of this recession without private sector jobs being created again here in the USA? 1. Can we have a strong secure Nation when in it is in a deep depression? 2. Why do the taxpayers have to save the "Free enterprise" systems? 3. Why are there citizens of the US, wanting the Nation to fall into a deep depression, especially while the present administration is in control? 4. Where is the American and the global companies to provide their investments back in this country instead of continuing to invest in the manufacturing plants of the lower wage labor and less EPA restricted countries? 5. Why is it necessary for the targeted spending by the Government to continue and to have help subsidize the private US investors while our unemployment is high? 6. When the free enterprise systems are left on their on, without any controls, they get greedy, fraud occurs, they get larger and want to monopolize and do away with other competition. The people lose their trust in the free markets and the financial systems when there is fraud and greed. Naturally, the people who are running these corporate systems want to make money as much money as possible and do not want any controls to limit how they have to treat their customers or to have any requirements of "checks and balances."

Concerning Jobs and Global economy There are difference ways of explaining what happened to our trade agreements, which allowed our record trade deficit, economic problems, our education demands, jobs and the conditions caused by the development of the global corporate monopolies that are using the low monetary value, with lower cost labor in other countries. Ever since the Unions have organized for better working conditions in the US, there has been opposition to any kind of representation by Employers. There is a lot of history involved concerning our labor unions and what happened as the US started getting the "free trade agreements" with the countries whose monetary values were lower than ours. In addition, their labor wages were lower. Then the “race was on” with the continuation of propaganda against the Unions, turning the public against these workers from many different reasons and in different directions. The pricing of the goods "Made in the USA" was too high as compared to the imported goods. When the Global corporate monopolies control where they manufacture their goods, it takes away the consumers choice of buying goods made in the USA. So, who is our trade deficit really with, the low labor wage countries or the global corporations? When the global companies have their goods manufactured outside the US by low cost labor then export their goods from those low wage countries to the US and to other countries while also selling their goods within the countries where the manufacturing takes place. What position does this put the US in for exporting manufacturing goods other than raw materials and farm products? Gradually, the truth about how many of our jobs have been lost due to the global companies investing their money, forming monopolies in the low monetary value countries and their outsourcing of our service jobs. What can we expect to happen if these private sector manufacturing jobs are not gotten back here in the USA and the consumers continure to spent their money for the imported goods?

The Democrats just want to throw money at the problem. the Republicans just what to say no. The Democrats are on the wrong track in the wrong direction with their agenda and the republicans offer no agenda. All this is sad from Grown men that are suppose to be educated and know what they are doing. The problem is simple and the repair is almost as simple, but it would require stepping on some industrial toes which non of them would do. The political contributions and money from lobbyists and special interest groups is too important.

Reply to Kenneth: Which direction would you take the country if we were in another "great depression"? The Republicans didn't say NO, in September 2008 in their panic of asking for $700 billion dollars for baling out their "un controlled" corporate friends. What direction did this take the country? It was similar to the stimulus recovery plan, which had a purpose of "stabilizing" the effects of the 2007 recession. There were choices to be made due to the conditions of our financial systems and our unsustainable economy global economy. Would the fraudulent financial systems been able to survive without the help of the FEDs? I agree with you about our elected leaders getting their pockets filled by the lobbyist. If the crisis conditions were so simple to "fix," why did we gett into them in the first place and why didn't the last administration "fix" the crisis issues befor getting kicked out of power?

Here is my ax to grind. Over a year was spent by the powers to be on health care. I believe that time should have been on creating jobs and then move on to issues like health care. Jobs should have come first because jobs would have solved a lot of problems. Now, after all the bailouts and all the cash for what ever programs, people still don't have jobs. What is wrong with the people of Washington? JOBS + JOBS + JOBS = PROBLEMS SOLVED.

My husband, a life long democrat has just switched to being a registered Independent because of the lawsuit filed by the government against the state of Az. Both of my grown sons and I are already Independents as while we supported many Democratic programs we did not support illegals entering our country and do not support amnesty under any name or conditions or birth right citizen given to the children of illegals. You can call us racist but we call those of you who aupport the millions of these illegals of all colors and all races who have taken the jobs Americans need desperately, such as factory work, restuarant work, janitorial, ect Traitors!

Here's a strategy you should have thought about---fix the economy as you said you could. Get people back working and FIGHT for what the Democratic Party stands for instead of chickening out. AND I'm a Democrat from Massachusetts who voted for Mondale and if I don't have faith in you anymore then that's not a good sign.

Republican candidates have proven not to be part of the solution to facing America's problems with affordable health care for the uninsured and also backing Wall Street, when financial reform is desperately needed. I feel Democrats should win most of the upcoming elections because the country is starting to move forward from the absymal Bush administration. Democrats need to work harder and smarter to educate what it is the Republicans actually stand for; they've already proven they're not willing to work in a bipartisan way to meet the needs and concerns of the American people. Everyone is tired of this lousy game that is played between both parties. Let's move forward and elect the candidates that are willing to work for the American people.
