Republicans Take the Lead in Ohio's Governor's and Senate Races

Republican candidates have jumped out to double-digit leads in both the Ohio governor's and Senate races, according to a Columbus Dispatch poll conducted Aug. 25 -Sept. 3.

In the gubernatorial contest, former Republican Rep. John Kasich leads Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland by 49 percent to 37 percent, with 4 percent preferring some other candidate and 10 percent undecided.

For the Senate seat being vacated by the GOP's George Voinovich, former Bush cabinet member and congressman Rob Portman leads Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher by 50 percent to 37 percent, with 3 percent preferring another choice and 9 percent undecided.

The margin of error is 2.2 points.

The Dispatch poll found that "the supporters of every statewide GOP candidate (including such posts as attorney general and secretary of state) are two to three times as likely as those who are backing the Democratic candidate to say they are more enthused than usual for this year's election."

A sweep of those offices could "return Ohio to the all-Republican rule that the state experienced from 1995 through 2006," the paper said.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. It is imperative that we elect persons who support wars based on lies. We must elect persons willing for the public to travel on bridges which without inspections can fall into rivers. The absence of food inspections desired by these candidates will allow Ohioans to purchase tainted foods capable of causing sickness and death. These candidates know the real solution to our problems are to engage in actions designed to lower the population. May these politicians show their real support for these policies by being on the bridge which fails.

I hope the Repubs do get all these states because I am sick and tired of all the nonsense going on, this back stabbing, this hate mongering. Maybe then, these people who live in this country will get exactly what they deserve. They will have more unemployment, no social security, no health care, more taxes for the middle class, the list goes on. We all know what the Repubs agenda is all about and that is more for themselves and nothing for the little people, the middle class, they want the rich to stay rich and keep on getting richer. That is when I'm going to say, you get exactly what you deserve, now what are you going to do. Every time I turn on the TV that's all I hear about is how the Dems are losing the house and the senate. At this point and time I really don't care two hoots about who wins in November because it's just going to be more of the same nonsene until these evil people can get this President out of the White House. If I was the President, I wouldn't want to be in this mess for four more years, these people are crazy and out of control, check them out some times.

puleeeese!!! The days of Taft and Noe are fresh in Ohio still. I find it hard to believe that we will fall back to those days again. How can Ted Strickland be forced to carry the water for years and years of republican corruption and feeding the rich!

Yeah, the Republican approach to cutting a budget is to lay you off, make it so you don't have any benefits, leaving you to look for nonexisting jobs. And in case you should happen upon just "any ole job," you'll have to work 24/7. Be careful what you ask for. We've become an instant spoiled society. How many of the latetst Ipods do we all need? How many of our family homes with no children in them need eight bathrooms?

Bruce, the Democrats "rule" and have been "ruling" since their election and sweep of the legislative houses in 2008. This is exactly what needs to stop. The Republicans will legislate and if they are smart they will listen to the people, not just tell the people what good for them. De-legislate, deregulate, repeal the massive health care fiasco, give student loans back to their private banks, get bloated government out of people's lives. No more bailouts; no more buying homes you can't afford, no more having things handed to you and not earned. Go Republicans Go.

I live in Ohio, before Strickland Ohio was a hot bed of republican corruption. Its disgusting to me as a state that the people that live here have such short term memorys and want to hand the keys back to the very drunks that got us in the mess were in. And not to mention the joke/embarrassment John Boehner is. I for one feel vomit rolling up in the back of my throat if these right wingers take back over and deal the death blow to an already in trouble (due to republicans failed policies and corruption) state. Dont do it Ohio, you'll be sorry, more sorry that when bush was in and the nation was losing 700,000 jobs a month. You better think again and think hard.

I'm originally from Ohio. Not understanding why Ohioans consistently lost steel jobs to England via Bush for Blair so he could get on board with the treason bush/cheney put on us. Year after year Ohio lost jobs, now they want to go republican again? Wake up Ohio, remember what the republicans did to you and you still haven't recovered, yet you want to turn around and put the final nail in the coffin. What a shame how short term Ohioans memories are. Don't believe the hype Ohio,Republicans are just re-inventing the wheel to get those votes. They do not have your best interest at heart! Go BUCKEYES!!!

pretty clear that both parties are owned by the same fat cats, the economy staying the same, especially the joblessness , the exportation of jobs and the tax breaks given to the big boys for doing so, well it appears that on top 2/3 s of the industrial class workers facing starvation, the Democratic Party has to invent ObamaCare. Now this would be one thing if it were optional , but this is clearly a tax gathering device to replace the vanished income taxes due to job destruction by both parties. Forced payment of Obamacare tax takes the place of the missing income taxes due to job loss and provides a mock insurance coverage for the out of work population who used to have coverage when they had a job. Those working now are working three days a week to pay their private health care insurance and no end is in sight. Hospitals , many owned by our elected politicians are still charging sky high fees. with no end in sight because Obamacare will pay them all off through our fed treasury. we are doomed

ernie...you don't have a clue what you're talking about just like the truth spinning ,lieing republicans...all you have said was keep insurance companies in charge so they can pick and choose who they will cover, let big pharm.charge what they want for drugs and make sure cheaper drugs can't get in,make sure wall street can screw everyone...if this is how you want to see this nation go bankrupt then vote republican...hard working Ohioians don't be fooled by republican LIES they hate the middle class and only want you around to serve them and fight their phoney wars
