Michelle Obama Gets Back to Work, to Team Up With Laura Bush for 9/11 Ceremony

Michelle Obama returns to the public stage this week with several events, including a debut official appearance with former First Lady Laura Bush at a 9/11 ceremony on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the political shops of anxious Democrats are waiting for Mrs. Obama to sign off on a campaign schedule and hit the road. White House senior adviser David Axelrod confirmed last month that the first lady will be on the 2010 campaign trail, telling CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "She feels strongly about the affirmative things that this administration has done."

I'm told that Mrs. Obama will be selective about the stops she makes and wanted a game plan that targets where she could do the most good.

As a top draw for Democrats -- in both fundraising and getting out the vote -- and more popular than President Obama, she can raise millions of dollars for candidates. As Democrats worry about losing control of Congress, every day Mrs. Obama is not on the stump is money left on the table.

After a summer filled with vacations (she caught enormous flak for her lavish holiday in Spain), Mrs. Obama is back at work after a weekend visit to Camp David. Here's what's scheduled this week:

TUESDAY: Dance series kicks off at the White House. Mrs. Obama hosts a dance workshop in the afternoon before an evening tribute to the great Judith Jamison, the driving force behind the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

WEDNESDAY: Mrs. Obama returns to New Orleans to launch the latest phase of her "Let's Move" childhood anti-obesity campaign. On the eve of the NFL season opener -- the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints host the Minnesota Vikings at the Superdome -- Mrs. Obama will appear with league Commissioner Roger Goodell and other NFL folks at an elementary school.

SATURDAY: Mrs. Obama observes the ninth anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks with Mrs. Bush in western Pennsylvania, near the site of the United 93 crash outside of Shanksville. All aboard perished as the passengers and crew fought back against terrorist hijackers.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
