Former President Bill Clinton is returning to Ohio Tuesday to campaign and raise money for the re-election of his friend, Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland, who is in a tough race against former Rep. John Kasich in a state hard hit by the recession.

Clinton and Strickland go back to the governor's days a decade ago as a congressman from hilly southeastern Ohio. He was a strong supporter of Clinton administration policies and cast a decisive vote for a Clinton priority, the Family and Medical Leave Act. Strickland was also an enthusiastic backer of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign, helping her win the Ohio primary.

Bill Clinton will appear at a fundraiser in Cleveland for Strickland at Barley House, a restaurant in the city's Warehouse District, the Plain Dealer reported. He plans to do another event in Columbus, where the gubernatorial candidates will meet in their first televised debate on the same day, according to Politico. It is the former president's second trip this year to Ohio on behalf of Strickland.

Strickland can use a boost. Kasich, a conservative, is an energetic campaigner who has often appeared on Fox News as a guest host for Bill O'Reilly on the "O'Reilly Factor." Recent surveys show Kasich leading Strickland by eight to 10 points, with the margin for error in the range of four to 4.5 points.

Strickland greeted President Obama Wednesday when he arrived in Cleveland for a speech at Cuyahoga Community College in suburban Parma.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

former Rep. John Kasich leading by 8 to 10 points !? We can't go back to the Taft years. This state has been road hard and put up wet just to serve the "wants of the few". Yes things are bad and yes without the good ol days of people and business spending money that they did not have. Now the cows have come home and we have to deal with it. We can start by not deludeing ourselves into thinking that we can go back to the way they where by voteing in Kasich. Wake up Ohio and stay the course. Strickland may be as dry as yesterdays toast but he is keeping the playing field level allowing for new beginings and new blood to try and raise Ohio back to it's glory days.
