Former President Bill Clinton is returning to Ohio Tuesday to campaign and raise money for the re-election of his friend, Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland, who is in a tough race against former Rep. John Kasich in a state hard hit by the recession.
Clinton and Strickland go back to the governor's days a decade ago as a congressman from hilly southeastern Ohio. He was a strong supporter of Clinton administration policies and cast a decisive vote for a Clinton priority, the Family and Medical Leave Act. Strickland was also an enthusiastic backer of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign, helping her win the Ohio primary.

Bill Clinton will appear at a fundraiser in Cleveland for Strickland at Barley House, a restaurant in the city's Warehouse District, the Plain Dealer reported. He plans to do another event in Columbus, where the gubernatorial candidates will meet in their first televised debate on the same day, according to Politico. It is the former president's second trip this year to Ohio on behalf of Strickland.
Strickland can use a boost. Kasich, a conservative, is an energetic campaigner who has often appeared on Fox News as a guest host for Bill O'Reilly on the "O'Reilly Factor." Recent surveys show Kasich leading Strickland by eight to 10 points, with the margin for error in the range of four to 4.5 points.
Strickland greeted President Obama Wednesday when he arrived in Cleveland for a speech at Cuyahoga Community College in suburban Parma.
