Ground Zero Mosque Iman: 'We Are Proceeding' With Project

Feisal Abdul Rauf, the religious leader at the head of a planned mosque and Islamic community center near the site of the 9/11 attacks in Manhattan, says backers are "proceeding" with the project amid cries of protest but also strong expressions of support -- from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to President Obama.

Rauf, breaking his long silence in a New York Times op-ed piece, said he hoped the "vitriol and rhetoric" surrounding the $100 million project could be "toned down" in coming days. "We have all been awed by how inflamed and emotional the issue of the proposed community center has become. The level of attention reflects the degree to which people care about the very American values under debate: recognition of the rights of others, tolerance and freedom of worship."

Opponents say it is insensitive to build a mosque so close to the place where radical Muslims, affiliated with al-Qaeda, crashed two planes into the World Trade Center, killing more than 2,700 and toppling the twin towers. Defenders say the Muslims behind the proposed project had nothing to do with the attack and have condemned it.

Rauf, who has represented the State Department as a spokesman for religious tolerance, has been out of the country and said little about the controversy until this week. He said he's "very sensitive to the feelings of the families of victims of 9/11, as are my fellow leaders of many faiths. We will accordingly seek the support of those families, and the support of our vibrant neighborhood, as we consider the ultimate plans for the community center." But "we are proceeding," he said.

Lost amid the commotion "is the good that has come out of the recent discussion," Rauf said. "I want to draw attention, specifically, to the open, law-based and tolerant actions that have taken place, and that are particularly striking for Muslims."

Rauf said the 9/11 anniversary commemoration on Saturday should be a "time to reflect and meditate and tone down the vitriol and rhetoric that serves only to strengthen the radicals and weaken our friends' belief in our values."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Islam didn't attack the United States, Al Qaida did. Anger at a Muslim Community Center is being misdirected.

Tolerent...the word of the month. To those that profess that we should be tolerent of other faiths, does that apply to tolerence of sharia law? Will you be tolerent when stonings or beheadings of women occur? Will you be tolerent when the muslims' "call to prayer" leads to streets being blocked from ambulances and fire trucks? Do any one of you think their religion is tolerent of our Christian nation?

This GZ mosque, despite its humanitarian cocoon and politically correct marketing, is not about peace or creating awareness - for it were - they'd have more respect to the victims and families. While Westerners who consider themselves chic and enlightened go to any lengths to avoid offending Islam, the Muslim community certainly lacks sensitivity to the location. Just because one has a right, doesn't make it right. Religious Freedom? I thought this was a "community center" not a mosque? If it's a community center as they claim it is, then NO, they don't have a RIGHT.

Remember all construction trades in New York are union. Most unions have already said they will not work on this project. I do not see this project getting real far, between the unions and the public!

The lack of sensitivity toward the families of the victims and the world shows how the developers have zero respect. It would not be allowed in UK "We The People" will vote against any Gov't that supported it. Bye Obama

So the enemy wins another one. Freedom of Religion in 'peaceful union with one another?' I cannot and do not rationalize this construction event as "peaceful union." I am so sad for the families of the victims. So sad for America. Just one more "In your face, America."

I could care less about the mosgue... However, I would like to challenge Obama to stop attacking the Republican Party this week and actually attack foreign ideaology such as terrorism and dictatorships.

Obama won't stop attacking the Republican Party because he thinks they are the enemy.

It's all a moot point. They only raised 18k, a far cry from the 100 million they need. The chances of it being built are slim or nothing.

First of all, thank you for setting methods and procedures in place for communication of valid ideas to identify and solve issues before us. Every religion has had individual or groups within it who have done harmful things to themselves or others, and they are dealt with only when a country has in place effective methods and honest committment to justice for all. The United States building-blocks all refer to God's encouragement for every individual to experience humanity with dignity, while it also has in place the CHECKS and BALANCES needed to deter those individuals and groups who intimidate, harm or politically control others. ISLAM should NOT have any MOSQUES in USA: One USA checks and balance is the SEPARATION of CHURCH and STATE Administrations. ISLAM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH and STATE. Many Islamic clerics do NOT SEPARATE themselves from State Administration and CONTROL or actively TRY to conrtol the POLITICAL PARTY of MANY COUNTRIES. ISLAM promotes itself as an EXCLUSIVE religion and does NOT TOLERATE OTHER RELIGIONS except where it is forced to. Christianity has many religions that diversifies from having exclusive power. This evolution in the New World was usually destroyed from taking place in the Old World of the the Middle Eastern cultures and is considered weak. ISLAM has been HIJACKED by many high-profile individuals and groups who use its religious base to PROMOTE VIOLENCE AGAINST OTHERS. HATE CRIMES. ISLAM is therefore USED by many as a TOOL that ENDANGERS LIBERTIES of Freedom of RELIGION, Freedom of SPEECH by no tolerence, stoning, murder, intimitation... and should not be allowed to gather until they allow diversity within their own realm for form other Islamic religions, and have NO CLERICS in POLITICAL POWER, either on the side-lines or forefront. Their change of attitude, methods and processes should be done back there and come back in 200 years or more to apply for RELIGIOUS RESIDENCY in the USA when all clerics and the congregations meet the criteria.
