Libertarian Bid for Murkowski Unlikely, May Mount Write-In Campaign

One last chance for Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The Alaska Republican is considering a long shot write-in campaign, after the Libertarian Party signaled it's unlikely to allow her to run under its banner.

Roll Call reported that Murkowski could announce by Thursday that she'll try to keep her seat by running as a write-in candidate.

"I'm no quitter," she told the Fairbanks Daily-News Miner earlier this week. "I'm weighing all my options and seeing what's available."

A spokesman for the Libertarian Party told Roll Call Wednesday that its executive board would probably not reverse its vote against allowing Murkowski on its ballot. A day earlier, Murkowski met briefly with Libertarian candidate David Haase to discuss taking his spot in the race.

The Republican Party is likely to oppose any write-in effort by Murkowski. The GOP has thrown its weight behind Fairbanks attorney Joe Miller, who pulled off a shocking upset over the senator in the primary.

The Democratic candidate is Sitka mayor Scott McAdams.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

What would everyone say if Joe Miller had lost and started a write-in or tried to run as a fake Libertarian candidate? Let her "Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you."
