Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick still holds the lead in his bid for re-election over Republican Charlie Baker and independent Tim Cahill, but still looks vulnerable in the state's gubernatorial contest, according to a poll conducted Aug. 29-31 for State House News Service.

Patrick leads Baker, a former health insurance executive, by 34 percent to 28 percent with Cahill, a Democrat-turned-independent who is the state's Treasurer, at 18 percent. Green Party candidate Jill Stein gets 4 percent. The margin of error is 4.8 points.

But that margin for Patrick hardly looks impregnable given that 56 percent of those surveyed disapprove of his performance as governor.

Pollster Gerry Chervinsky told State House News: "If Deval Patrick were in a one on one race and there were no Tim Cahill, Deval Patrick wouldn't have a chance."

However, the Cahill factor has been two-edged, according to Chervinsky. While Cahill has been siphoning away some conservative Democrats from Patrick, he's also poaching some independent voters who didn't like Patrick and might have turned to Baker.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

We need an explanation of remarks made by Gov Deval Patrick and the hopes of jobs in Massachusetts from the Cape Wind Project . How many jobs are going to Rhode Island and how many jobs are going to Massachusetts ? \ It appears for the April 28,2010 meeting between Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Gov Patrick all the jobs sre going to Rhode Island ! http://www.doi.gov/news/doinews/upload/Cape-Wind-EA.pdf Quonset Staging Area Background: The FEIS describes the industrial port facility located in Quonset, Rhode Island as the onshore staging area for major construction activity associated with the Proposed Action. This site was formally known as the U.S. Naval Reservation-Quonset Point. Following the downsizing of the U.S. Naval Reservation-Quonset Point, the site became an industrial and commercial park. The industrial commercial park is approximately 3,150 acres and houses several large businesses. In addition, the site is home to a deep water port with two piers that are capable of servicing large ships.
