Eat Your Peas! Americans Not Eating Enough Vegetables, New Report Says

It's all because you didn't eat your vegetables as a kid. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Americans still don't eat enough vegetables, and they're consuming a little less fruit than they were a decade ago.

The government study said in 2009, 32.5 percent of adults in the United States consumed two or more servings of fruit or juice in day -- compared to 34.4 percent who had that much in 2000, the Associated Press reported Thursday.
American adults still not eating enough fruits and vegetables, CDC says
Vegetable consumption is stagnant. About 26 percent ate veggies three or more times a day -- the same as in 2000, according to a large telephone survey conducted by the center. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases, the CDC says. Government food experts say most adults should ideally eat four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruit daily (a single apple would amount to a serving).

No immediate word on the report from First Lady Michelle Obama, who is promoting on anti-obesity program for children that includes efforts to improve nutrition in school cafeterias. But a previous occupant of the White House, former President George H. W. Bush, famously proclaimed his distaste for one particular green vegetable 20 years ago. "I do not like broccoli," he said. "I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I think it frightening what the general American diet consists of! Especially when we have some many great and accessible produce items (see: http://northonharper.com/2010/09/eat-your-veggies/). Also what we consider acceptable vegetable nutrition: Creamed Spinach? Seriously? I think there is a lot to eating vegetable rich food- the macrobiotic diet has been sited in many cases where cancer has gone into remission. Even if you aren't eating that strictly it is still possible to eat a yummy vegetable rich diet- even a yummy pea rich diet (see: http://northonharper.com/2010/09/peas-in-a-pod/)!!!!!

Obesity is also a side effect of malnutrition, not necessarily just eating too much. The body is craving nutrition, and the person who is eating poor quality food can't get enough! The government subsidizes cheap, not nutritional food products like corn..think high fructose corn syrup. It is a very cheap filler in almost all processsed foods. It is destroying people's health and leading to obesity and diabetes in the country. If the government would subsidize the veggie farmers and bring the prices down, we could all enjoy the wonderful fruits and veggies!

I hope this isn't another 'Bush caused this' moment. The reason people aren't eating the fruit and vegetables is,first the prices are going sky high, plus these are perishable items that must be eaten within days.Poor people are eating more rice and pasta now, because they can have larger supplies on hand at all times and always have something to eat in the house. That's providing they don't have their water shut off, because the couldn't pay their bills. It's scary, but we can't continue like we are in this economy.

The reason for our obesity, cancer, and diabetes is due to the fact that we have increase the consumption of sugar-soda, diet soda, and all of our food is processed and or pasterurized. All the the essential enzymes are lost. But the FDA and the CDC will not acknowledge those fact.

What regulations are there for vegetables imported regarding pesticides banned in the US but not in the countries that grow the produce. Who checks? And yet there are pundits running for congress this fall who want less regulation or resources (people) to enforce existing regulations. People better smarten up and educate themselves on growing and preserving. Both seem to be a dying art.

People don't cook anymore. Fresh veggies are quite cheap--they take time to prepare though. People would rather eat fast than eat well.

I can't afford veggies and fruits... When I go to the grocery store... I would buy meat, bread, and pasta/rice. I get tired of drinking water, so I need some sodas or juice. Enough meat for a month and other stuff... total $100. That is all I can afford... Sorry.
