Republicans held Michigan's governorship for 20 years between 1963 and 1983 (starting with Mitt Romney's father,George) and have swapped it back-and-forth since then with Democrats. The latest poll on this year's race says it's going to be the Republicans' turn again.

Republican Rick Snyder, former head of Gateway computers and one of this year's crop of "outsider" faces, is leading Democrat Virg Bernero, mayor of Lansing, by a whopping 53 percent to 26 percent in a poll of likely voters conducted Aug. 25-29 by Mitchell Research and published in the Detroit Free Press this week.

Snyder has similarly lopsided lead among men and women voters, and independents.

As big as that lead is, the Free Press says the pollster cautioned that Michigan is still a very competitive state for Democrats and the margin is likely to close as election day nears.

Polling analysts predict big gains for Republicans this year in gubernatorial contests and if Snyder wins, he would be taking a seat held by Democrat Jennifer Granholm, who couldn't run again due to term limits. Granholm got the job following Republican John Engler who, in turn, followed Democrat James Blanchard.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
