Marco Rubio Posts Big Lead Over Charlie Crist in Florida Senate Race

Republican Marco Rubio holds a double-digit lead over independent Charlie Crist in the Florida Senate race, with Democrat Kendrick Meek in third place, according to a poll of likely voters conducted Sept. 1-5 by Susquehanna Research for the Sunshine State News.

Rubio leads Crist by 43 percent to 29 percent with 23 percent for Meek and 5 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3 points.

Meek's showing is a little better than previous ones. If he gains more ground, it would be bad news for Crist, who cannot afford to see his share of Democratic votes diminish.

Crist is attracting 35 percent of the Democratic vote while Meek right now has only 45 percent support from his own party.

Republican consultant John Wehrung told the Miami Herald, ``The next 10 days are critical for Kendrick Meek because he really has to show Democrats in this state and in Washington in particular that he has a shot, that he's a viable candidate who can win. There's a blinking red light in the corner of Kendrick Meek's eye warning him that Charlie Crist is stealing all his Democrats and he needs to find a way to get them back, like now.''

Rubio gets 70 percent support among fellow Republicans while Crist holds on to 21 percent of voters from his former party.

Rubio edges Crist among independent voters by 38 percent to 36 percent with Meek getting just 16 percent.

"Crist can't win this race if he doesn't peel back some of Rubio's support among independents," Pollster Jim Lee told Sunshine. "With only 5 percent of voters remaining undecided, there is not a lot of room to grow for any of the candidates."

A CNN/Time/Opinion Research poll published Wednesday had Rubio ahead of Crist by a statistically insignificant 36 percent to 34 percent, but that survey was of registered voters. This close to the election, most pollsters believe that likely-voter surveys are the more accurate predictors.

Rasmussen Reports' first poll following Meek's victory in the Democratic primary on Aug. 24 had Rubio ahead of Crist by 40 percent to 30 percent with 21 percent for Meek. Rasmussen also surveyed likely voters.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. So why is what is happening in Florida any different that what is happening in the rest of the country. The American people are upset with Washington. We were told of a change. Which is not working now the people will make the change.

Look at what Rubio and his buddies have done to Florida. It is in horrible shape and now this dumb state will send him to the Senate? If the real issues come out and what his positions are he will lose.

Rubio is the vanguard of a new wave of young, energized, articulate and most importantly constitutional lawmakers that are going to ride this conservative wave to power. Hang Ten!

rip300rog, you may be right, but I tend to believe that Rubio is just taking Foley's place.

Amazing. I live in Northern Florida and am familar with all three candidates in the Election. Crist sided with the Teachers when the Florida Legislature passed a bill to tie Tenure to Performance and Crist vetoed it to get their vote. Crist then took money from the Republican party and donors and when he found out that he hada better chance of beating Rubio as an Independent then he switched and refused to return money to donors who he had assured that he would run aa a Republican. Crist did not care if he took votes from Rubio that might allow the Democrat to win. Unfortunately for Crist the wrong Democrat won the Primary and took votes from Crist.Crist has also refused to announce with which party he would caucus. Why anybody would vote for Crist is beyond me. If the choice was just between Crist and Meek then I would vote for Meek since I know where he stands.

Crist is a perfect example of what's wrong with our political system. Someone who thinks he is indispensible and doesn't have to be accountable to anyone. He represents no "greater good" - it's all for his personal gain. He has proven he simply can't be trusted.

What do you mean by "typical Tea Party candidate"? If more of our elected people listened to the voters and adhered to the Constitution - instead of playing these power games - we wouldn't need a Tea Party. But we do, and it's long past time. Do you really believe everyone should just go along with Obama and the Democrats(just like the Democrats supported GW Bush every turn of the way, right???)regardless of the results?

Arlen Spector just got booted from the Senate so why would Charlie Crist be a welcomed addition. Crist won't declare which party he will caucus with but we will know if George Stephanopoulus asks about his sun tan.
