Michelle Obama, Laura Bush Laud Heroism of United 93 Passengers

Michelle Obama, speaking Saturday morning at a 9/11 commemoration ceremony in Shanksville, Pa., said she came there as an American "filled with a sense of awe of the heroism of my fellow citizens."

The first lady was joined by her predecessor, Laura Bush, at the site where 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 died when their hijacked plane crashed in a field. The passengers have long inspired admiration and respect for their heroism in trying to overpower the hijackers, who apparently planned to crash the plane into either the White House or the Capitol.

Mrs. Bush recalled that on 9/11 "we saw the worst of our enemies and the best of our nation. America was attacked, but the deepest belief of our democracy was vindicated -- that our greatness and strength is found in the character of our citizens."

Mrs. Obama praised the former first lady "for all her work to help the nation heal in the days and months after the attack."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

USA is not fighting terrorism, it is playing politics with terrorism. Just like you cannt eradicate diseases by trying to keep them away from your shores but let them fester in other people's land, you cannot fight terrorism by making deals with the terrorist and finance them to commit those acts against other countries. American government has used American taxpayer's money to pay Pakistan which in turn has funnelled it to terrorist organization fighting against India. US knows that, and they seem to be OK with it. Interestingly, their money was used to attack US troops in Afghanistan also as the wikileaks has pointed out. All the countries of the world shoul unite against the common menace and stop playing politics with this mortal danger.

Did Ms. O decide maybe she was proud of her country that day after all - even just a little?

she has always been proud of her country...you people have blown her comment way out of proportion...even Laura Bush defended her and said she knew what Mrs. Obama meant.

Our President FDR said before a Joint Session of Congress back on December 7th 1941 that this day will "LIVE IN INFAMMY", Well 9/11/01 will also live that way in the Hearts of Americans....The only difference is we WON that World War II and it took 4 years. But this War on Terrorism is not being won and we'll never know when it will be over as long as we have Nations that supply Terrorists to fuel their efforts....If we can only drop that BOMB on them like President Truman did on the Japanese and we know where they are and countries that harbor them, then and only then we'll eradicate terror in the world....God Bless Our U.S.A.

Poppie, Which nations will you bomb? Those with terrorists living there? Well, the US and every other country in the world has terrorists who live in it. I don't subscribe to the "kill them all and let God sort them out" illogic.

Mrs. Obama doesn't need to take a lesson form Mrs. Bush. Both are classy ladies in their own way. They may have different styles but we can be proud of both of them.

I just wanted to thank AOL for the new approach to comments made by readers. It was becoming second nature for me to refrain from scrolling too far down the page in order to avoid a sea of cruel and hateful comments. Thank you for returning this forum to one where ideas are exchanged and the art of a civilized debate is the norm and not the exception.
