Washington in 60 Seconds: RNC Launching 'Fire Pelosi' Bus Tour

Good morning, Capitolists! It's back-to-work day for Congress today as the House and Senate buckle up for their final work period before members of Congress face one angry electorate. In the next 60 seconds, read about the congressional to-do list HERE and everything else happening in Washington:

- All Aboard! Michael Steele and the RNC will launch a cross-country bus tour Wednesday, complete with a giant image of Nancy Pelosi emblazoned across the side, promising loyal Republicans the bus "won't quit cruising until we've kicked out-of-touch Democrats and their radical leaders out of power on election day." Anyone who follows Pelosi carefully, though, knows she's probably not losing much sleep over having her face painted on the side of a bus. Last year she said of her detractors: "I couldn't care less about what they say. . . . What's lower than a nano? That's the interest that I have."

- Boehner-Obama Feud on Taxes: Point Goes to Boehner. A war of words has broken out between the White House and their favorite bad guy, House Minority Leader John Boehner, over whether the Ohio congressman would really vote for a partial extension of the Bush tax cuts, as Boehner said yesterday. But careful House watchers (including Boehner) know that his vote isn't particularly important. With the Dems' 39-vote majority, at least for now, the minority leader's announcement does little more than entice the Democrats to bring the bill up now for GOP chicanery later.

- Impeaching Like It's 1999. The Senate gavels in its September session today, and it will include a special impeachment committee that will begin the rare process of removing a judge (Thomas Porteous of Louisiana) from office. That will mark the first time since the Senate voted to acquit then-President Bill Clinton on impeachment charges that the upper chamber has taken up articles of impeachment against a public official.

- Clinton and Biden Stumping in Pa. Proving that a political career is never over till it's over, former President Clinton will join Vice President Joe Biden on the campaign trail today when the two popular Democrats stump for Joe Sestak, the Democratic Senate hopeful in Pennsylvania.

- GOP, Barr the Doors! Former congressman and former Republican Bob Barr writes this morning that if the GOP wins back either house of Congress, it won't be because of anything clever they said or did. "There simply is no national GOP vision, agenda or leadership." Read the rest of Barr's column, along with nuggets like "Mega-schools are mega-dumb," can be found at AJC.com.

- First Wedding Ring Mystery? The Brits at the Daily Mail have a question for President Obama: "Where's your wedding ring?" The band, which the Mail describes as "an intricate design from Indonesia," was not around the president's ring finger during his press conference at the White House Friday. A White House staffer solves the mystery, however, telling the Mail that the president's hardware is out for repairs.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Seems to me the Democratic party would want to fire Pelosi. She has about a single digit public approval rating...

Given a choice between republican John Boehner who seems to be beholden to the lobbyists and democrat Nancy Pelosi who is honest and fiercely independent, I prefer Pelosi.

Pelosi started her Speaker tenure with one of the biggest lies in Congressional history. She promised if America trusted Dems with Congress, she and Dems would immediately end funding for the war in Iraq... four years and countless American lives ago. And Co0ngress has gone downhill from there.

If the Republicans spent as much time on coming up with solutions to our nations problems as they do bashing Democrats, then perhaps they would once again regain some credibility. Nothing on the side of the bus about issues or solutions, just bashing the majority party. They have yet to tell the American people just what their plan is....all they do is say no to whatever the Democrats come up with. The Democrats may be going in the wrong direction, but for God's sake, Republicans, tell us what your plan is.
