Washington in 60 Seconds: Davids Meet Goliath in Politics Today

Wakie, wakie, Capitolists! It's Election Day in several states across the country and reckoning day for a few candidates who seem to believe that being a politician means never having to say you're sorry.

Read all about those candidates, and what's happening in Washington, in the next 60 seconds:

- Taxing Work in Congress. The Senate gavels into session at 10 a.m., when senators will debate a small business bill in front of the C-SPAN cameras, but will be debating the future of the Bush tax cuts behind closed doors. Democrats can't get on the same page about keeping tax cuts away from people making more than $250,000, while Republicans aren't in agreement over how tough to hold the line for the "rich" guys. Stay tuned . . .

- Things Get Dirty in Delaware. The little state will pack a big political punch today when a crucial Senate primary will decide which Republican gets the chance to run for Joe Biden's old seat. The presumed shoe-in, Rep. Mike Castle, is a perennial nice guy but has started calling unknown Sarah Palin-fave Christine O'Donnell "delusional" and slammed her for using campaign funds to pay her own bills. O'Donnell said her money woes show voters she's just like them. Just 30,000 people will decide it, and the Wilmington News Journal has the scoop.

- Rangeling Victory From the Jaws of Defeat. A report from Twitterland says "@maghabe123: Rangel gets applauded at polling site," a truly astonishing turn of events for embattled Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), who is headed for an ethics trial in Congress, but he may also be headed to victory for a 21st term in Washington. He's polling well ahead of his closet challenger, Adam Clayton Powell IV, whose recent DUI and sexual harassment claims haven't helped helped much. New York voters will decide Rangel's fate today.

- Silk Stocking Standoff. Another New York primary to watch today: Upper East Side Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who is being challenged by 34-year-old Reshma Saujani. The popular Maloney hasn't had a tough race for years, but has gotten a vigorous challenge from Saujani, a former investment banker who has raised a bundle of money and gotten the support of Russell Simmons and Diana Taylor, the lady friend of NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

- Another Obama Bestseller? Along with passing health care reform and holding beer summits, President Obama managed to write another book. This one, called "Of Thee I Sing," is billed as a letter to his daughters and will be on sale at Amazon.com after the midterm elections. Lynn Sweet has the details.

- He's Not Heavy, He's My Husband. And finally, one more contest today takes place in Washington, D.C., where a bitter battle for mayor is taking a toll on Michelle Fenty, the wife of Mayor Adrian Fenty. She took their three kids along when she voted for their dad today (he's polling up to 17 points behind Vincent Gray, a councilman favored by the city's older establishment, including former mayor Marion Barry). Mrs. Fenty has clearly been upset by her husband's possible upset and spoke to reporters last week, giving a rare glimpse at the rough life of a political spouse.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
