Desire for Third Party Growing, Poll Finds

A growing number of people believe Republicans and Democrats are doing a poor job of representing the American public and that it's time for a third major political party, according to a new survey.

A Gallup Poll released Friday finds 58 percent of respondents say a third party is needed in this country -- a significant jump from 2008 and the highest percentage in seven years.

Political ideology doesn't seem to be a major factor among those who desire a third party -- with 61 percent of liberals, 60 percent of moderates, and 54 percent of conservatives believing it's time for an alternative. In the past, conservatives have typically been far less likely than liberals and moderates to support the creation of another party, according to Gallup:
Independents, as might be expected given their lack of primary allegiance to either of the two major parties, express a greater degree of support (74%) for a third party than do Republicans (47%) and Democrats (45%). Over time, independents have consistently been the political group most eager to see a third party formed. But each party group is more likely now than in 2008 to support the formation of a third major party. At that time, about two months before the presidential election, 38% of Democrats, 40% of Republicans, and 63% of independents thought a third party was necessary
The stats are similar to Thursday's New YorkTimes/CBS News poll, in which 54 percent of voters said the country needed a third party to compete with the Democrats and Republicans.

How much does the rise of the Tea Party play into the numbers? Gallup says probably some, but not a lot. Tea Party supporters fall right in the middle: 62 percent of those who describe themselves as supporters of the grassroots conservative movement favor a third major party, but so do 59 percent of those who are neutral toward the Tea Party.

Gallup points out the swing towards desiring another major party comes at a time when Americans are giving relatively weak approval ratings to Congress and the president. Analysts suggest that while a third major party is unlikely to be formed any time soon, the desire for one "may be manifested in voters' strong anti-incumbent sentiments" this year.

The poll was conducted jointly with USA Today from Aug. 27-30.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. A major goal of the Tea Party is to change the attitude of elected officials. In the private sector, employees continue to do their best job over the years for several reasons: Most of us were raised to do a good days work for a days’ pay, we work toward earning merit raises, we hope for promotions, and we work toward being vested and receiving a larger pension when we retire. Conversly, the Legislators, both State and Federal, have guaranteed themselves automatic pay increases, huge pensions, and lifetime guaranteed healthcare benefits up front. They do not have to work to earn anything. They get it after one term in Congress. They seem to quickly lose the integrity they advocated on the campaign trail, and their vows that they are servants of the people, if they ever believed that in the first place. The benefits they have given themselves, by laws that THEY wrote, have relieved them of the need to do a good job for the people, and simply concentrate on increasing their own wealth and power. They have even managed to exempt themselves from many of the laws they burden the citizens with, and if they do find themselves in “hot water,” the taxpayer often has to pay for their legal representation. Is this why so many candidates will lie, cheat, and steal, to gain/keep positions in public office?

Kyle, the separation of church and state was to stop states from giving tax money to a state church. It was more about not having a designated state church than trying to erase God from our government. All you have to do is look at the original documents and a strong beliefand reliance on God is clearly evident. Our Founding Fathers were profoundly religious and were careful to erect a government guided by God and the bible as they had already seen what happened in France during the French revolution when the secular humanists removed God from everything. You didn't know that because the secular humanists have gotten control of our educational system and the courts. Our history has been manipulated and changed to push a world view and idealology of self reliance over God reliance. As a result, we have the steady decay of moral integrity in the generations proceeding the take over of our schools. Our government was not set up as a theocracy. But our forefathers came over here in record numbers to escape European oppression of religion. Now, the secular humanists are doing the same and robbing our youth of our history. Check out text books before 1910...very different. Where did they get their facts to change history...rumor, inuendo and fiction!

The way I see it, the coporations have way too much power. They dictate the quality of the air we breath, the water we drink, and the food we eat. If it does not suit big business then it does not get done. Just take a look at the situation with illegal (excuse me undocumented aliens), if it wasnt for the cheap labor they supply they would not be here. And the Republicans are the party of the moneyied class and always have been. But that is not to say that the Dems are for the average American, the working man they are not. So, yes there is a crying need for someone, some party, to represent the middle.

Sooner or later this country has got to realize that we have to get this runaway defense spending under control. As it stands right now, half the defense spending in the entire world is by the United States. This is unsubstainable.

Yup, the way to start giving AMERICA back to Americans is TERM LIMITS, with NO strings attached!!!! These crooks in Washington have such a great Golden Parachute that THEY voted on without you or me knowing, it's a real shame they are screwing us folks like they are doing. Seems politicans have become lower parasites than lawyers..... and we Americans believe all the trash they spurt out, only to get elected, then soon forget.... VOTE THE ALL OUT!

If you take a close look at most of our current politicians you will see that they are lawyers. funny isn't it how we allow the people who manipulate the laws to make the laws then enforce them when and how they see fit instead of by the book. Seems to me to be somewhat of a conflict of interests where they all benefit no matter what. I guess we really are stupid for allowing it.

We need a Middle Class Party that serves the 60% who aren't the 20% rich (Republican) or the 20% poor (Democrat). We couldn't lose.

We already have a 3rd party. It's called The Libertarian Party. I have always voted for the Democrats. Until 2008. Then all this garbage coming from Republican RINOs and the Republican power brokers. Give me a break. I love Ron Paul. He makes sense. So now I joined The libertarian Party. It's time has come. Please check us out!

People, people! - no mater how bad we want a third party - please be careful and don't let the Dems keep control. We need to restore the checks and balances in our government - there should be rules to somehow keep one party from having a majority in any branch of government. History shows us that when it happens nothing positive gets done for the people - only party and personal agendas thrive.

Having another party wouldn't be any better because they would become just a corrupt as the two we have. We need to have a different system for Financing campaign funding so each candidate equal funding and shouldn't know where any contributions came from. We shouldn't allow Corporations to be involved in Politics, The people running the corporations already have a personal vote they can use.

Completely agree. There should be a flat dollar allocation for campaigning that comes as a grant to each qualified nominee. After the nomination, any candidate who takes one dime from a lobbyist or corporation is immediately disqualified. The rest of the details need to be worked out, especially the enforcement part...

I could never figure out why they brag about wasting so much money on the campaigns - to me it only shows how badly they mismanage money.

Being that the media is run by big money, be they Reps or Dems, they have always attacked alternative parties, labeling them as crazies or radicals. The voting public has allowed the media to tell them who to vote for rather than doing any research themselves. Voter apathy has allowed the two-party system and government to become the monster that it is. People need to take the time to look at the alternatives. An excellent place to start is the Libertarian Party. Less government, lower taxes and more freedom.
