Republican Ron Johnson, a plastics manufacturer new to politics, has followed up his capture of the GOP Senate nomination by moving out to a 51 percent to 44 percent lead over three-term Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Sept. 15. One percent prefer some other candidate and 4 percent are undecided. The margin of error is 4 points.

In Rasmussen's previous six match-ups between the pair, they had never been more than 2 points apart.

Johnson is seen favorably by 61 percent of voters and unfavorably by 33 percent with 5 percent not sure. Feingold is seen favorably by 51 percent and unfavorably by 46 percent, with 3 percent not sure.

Johnson draws 94 percent support from fellow Republicans while Feingold has the backing of 85 percent of Democrats. Johnson leads 58 percent to 30 percent among unaffiliated voters with the rest undecided or preferring someone else. Rasmussen does not provide sample sizes for each group.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

The Democrats have dug their own grave. They have not LISTENED to the hard working legal American taxpayers who demand less spending, less taxes and more jobs. The Democrats have followed Obama like following the Pied Piper to their defeats.

America is behind you, Ron. Signed, a disillusioned democrat looking for a party that says NO.
