Is Glenn Beck the Next Billy Graham? For a Few. (Maybe Too Few?)

After Fox News host Glenn Beck led his spirit-filled "Restoring Honor" revival on the Mall last month, he seemed to be reinventing himself as an American Moses delivering America back to the Promised Land -- or perhaps the next Billy Graham, as Southern Baptist leader Richard Land suggested.

Yet a new poll shows that Beck isn't quite yet a figure of biblical proportions, with 17 percent of Americans believing Beck "is the right person to lead a religious movement" and 50 percent saying he's not.

Even among Republicans and white evangelicals, a highly motivated cohort of conservative voters who view Beck more favorably than other Americans, fewer than one-third say he is the right person to lead a religious movement.

The poll, conducted by Public Religion Research Institute in partnership with Religion News Service, also showed that a majority of Americans (57 percent) don't know Beck is a Mormon, and those who do know he is a Mormon -- especially conservative Protestants who are particularly suspicious of Mormon beliefs -- are less likely to trust him as a religious leader.

Glenn Beck, Billy GrahamThose results are in line with other surveys on Mormonism, John Green, an expert on religion and politics at the University of Akron, told RNS. "Because other surveys show that Mormons are not especially popular with Americans, as a rule, then it's likely that if more people found out Glenn Beck's religious background, that would inhibit them following him," Green said.

On the other hand, it's hard to think of any public figure in the United States -- other than Billy Graham, who is in his 90s and infirm -- who would poll higher numbers as a candidate to lead a religious revival. The religious right seems to be in decline, eclipsed by the fervor of Tea Partiers, and with few serious marquee names.

Then again, Jesus started with just a dozen followers, and even most of them didn't stick with him at the end.

The PRRI/RNS Religion News Poll was based on telephone interviews conducted of 1,007 U.S. adults between Sept. 9 and 12, after Beck's Washington rally. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. In our opinion, the best religous leader will have respect for the life of unborn babies, and protect them from abortion. He or she should have a strong love of Jesus Christ and His teachings. Be respectful to other faiths . To have a mature respect for our country and its traditions. Freedom of speech is important; but building a Muslim mosque at " 9/11 Ground Zero is disrespectable to our brothers and sisters who died because of that gowardly attack. God bless America. If I could select a successor to Billy Graham, it would be David Jeremiah. You can catch him on "Turning Point" on Christian TV on Sunday.

Newsflash - -BECK is NOT trying to be an Evangelist. Graham was. Beck is no different than that guy at work you go to lunch with, your kid's teacher, the policeman, the cab driver, the cashier who rang up your groceries, your neighbor, your local congressman . .. Mormons are everywhere. Beck is an easy to love and relate to, radio entertainer who stirs up poignant conversation who happens to be Mormon. - Thats it. If that faith grounds them morally and validates their integrity, then great. Hopefully all faith for everyone does that. If he offeres advice. . and its good. Is it any less valid because he's Mormon? Of course not.

To understand the Glen Beck phenomenom you need to rent and watch a famous Frank Capra movie from around 1940 called "Meet John Doe". It is an erie parallel to this Beck character. Great movie. About a populist political movement during the depression called the John Doe society. It was all about bluster, bombast and nothingness. There never was an actual John Doe until the leaders of the new party conspired to create one. They found a hobo (Gary Cooper as I recall in the movie). They cleaned him up, gave him a shave and made him the supposed real John Doe. As the movie progressed Gary Cooper became John Doe and became larger than life. Great ending. Glen Beck's parallel to John Doe is startling. A hobo from nothingness, who talks a lot but says nothing becomes the face for a national movement of some sort. Glen Back is John Doe. Please rent the movie and see what I'm talking about.

Beck's popularity is beginning to really get under the left's skin. That's a good sign, right? That said, his show is very boring these days and while I agree with some of his message, the format of his show puts me to sleep.

Glenn Beck leading a religious movement? This cretin couldn't be trusted to lead a bowel movement. Glenn Beck is a great entertainer, and he is always looking for a few good rubes to show up, pay good money, and be entertained. The problem is too many people take this entertainment seriously...hence, we are at the point of some people thinking the President is behind global warming, oil well explosions, killing baby birds and kidnapping Santa Claus.

@David Gibson Dave I don't recall anyone saying Beck is a religious leader. That's except for you. Americans that believe in Beck believe in his political stance not his religious stance. I think it's clear that you are attempting to minimalize Beck for political gains. Tell me when you get a job that you're qualified to do. Good luck with that pal.

Don, Beck's rally was as he said, "not political". He was portraying himself as a preacher on that day. He has claimed God talks to him. Did you see any of the rally?
