Joe Biden Warns Delaware Dems Not to be Complacent About Christine O'Donnell

During a trip to his home state Friday, Joe Biden said the race for his old Senate seat is not a sure thing for Democrats, warning them to campaign "as serious as you possibly can."

The vice president didn't mention Tea Party favorite Christine O'Donnell by name, but he said a win by the Republican candidate in Delaware could take Congress back to an era of GOP control "on steroids," Tribune Media Services reported.

Biden said he and his family would throw their support behind Chris Coons in the final weeks before the November election, promising a bruising battle despite the Democrat's lead in the polls.

"Do not take this lightly," Biden said in Wilmington. "Gird your loins for anything . . . It's not likely to be a straightforward debate."

Many Democrats had hoped that Beau Biden, the son of the vice president, would seek the seat long held by his father. The younger Biden decided instead to run again as Delaware's attorney general.

Tribune Media Services said the vice president gave a strong endorsement of Coons, praising "his independence, his intelligence and his gut."

"I am enthusiastically for -- have been enthusiastically for -- this genuinely independent guy," Biden said. "My son, Beau, my sister, my whole family are ready to work and do everything we can."

A Public Policy Polling Survey this week found Coons, the New Castle County executive, starting out with a 50-percent-to-34-percent lead over O'Donnell, with 16 percent undecided.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. We have had almost 2 yrs of a majority Democrat policy and it's just not working for most of us, so the dems should be worried about whats happening. Double digit unemployment, worthless economy, stimulus was a joke, heath care reform passed when the majority of americans opposed and our country is in record debt, The Dems should be VERY worried.

The woman is 42 years old -its amazing they have to go so far back to find something they don't like about her. How many of us changed in the last twenty years. The alternative is the self proclaimed Marxist.

That's hilarious. You complain about people drudging up stuff about O'Donnell (some of it only a few years old)and then reference a quarter century old nickname friends gave him after returning from a trip to Africa that he used in a college newspaper column. Genius!

You know the Democrats are running scared. They had to send Biden to his home state 3 days after the primary. They keep wondering how long they can keep that state Democratic. It was hit had with this recession mostly effecting the ones Obama promised to take care of. It sure looks like he kept his promise. Now the people will show their thanks in November.

When Christine O'Donnell received a million dollars in one day, biden should be worried. She has closed the gap from 25 points to 11 and the polls had castle ahead so what does that tell you.

That she won a primary by 1,500 votes by running up the score in the "slower lower". She didn't even win New Castle county, where coincidentally 2/3 of the state lives. That Democrats outnumber registered Republicans by an almost 2 to 1 margin? She better hope that New Castle County gets hit by a blizzard on election day.

O'Donnell is a threat, because she's out of touch and thinks like we're in the Dark Ages. She would set this country back years, and we do no need that in any level of our government.

nogayrepublicans: This government is already well on the way to putting us back in the dark ages but actually the wording should be changed to a third world country.

Christine O'Donnell has very scary and archaic views. She would help set this country back years. I'd vote for Satan before I'd vote for an out of touch and ancient thinking Republican. They got us into this horrible mess, and it will be a cold day on the Equator when I vote for any of them!!!!!!

What?!! We have the VP whipping the troops into action? So, is O'Donnell a threat or isn't she? If the Dems are worried, I have to wonder.....
