Obama Health Care Event: New Concern Over White House PR Breakdown

With a raft of consumer protections about to take effect under his new health law, President Obama traveled to a back yard in suburban Falls Church, Va., to chat with real Americans who are getting badly needed help because of it. For his perseverance against the odds, he received many heartfelt thank-yous -- but also his second reproach this week about losing the spin wars.

The lament Wednesday came from Betsy Burton, who owns The King's English, a bookstore in Salt Lake City, and is the parent of a son with "intractable seizures." She said she faced a decision between closing the store or ending health benefits for her employees, including her own family. But then she learned that tax credits in the new law, available to 4 million small businesses, will reduce her health costs from an unsustainable 30 percent to a manageable 18 percent.

"A huge campaign of misinformation" has left the impression that the new law is bad for small businesses, Burton said. "What can we do about this misinformation? It seems so pervasive everywhere and it's so wrong," she told Obama. "I think this bill is really affordable for small business and I want some way to get that word out."

Her concern echoed a comment Monday from Walt Rowen, owner of Susquehanna Glass in Columbia, Pa., at a CNBC town hall with Obama in Washington. He told the president his stimulus package "funded a very ailing financial system" that small businesses rely on, and his investment in the auto industry saved millions of jobs and could turn a profit.

"And yet your critics continue to paint you as a dramatically anti-business president," Rowen said. "I believe you are investing in this country, as small businesses invest. And yet for some reason the public just doesn't get it. I need you to help us understand how you can regain the political center, because you're losing the war of sound bites, you're losing the media cycles."

In neither appearance did Obama fully address the question of why he and his White House have failed to penetrate the public consciousness when it comes to his views, aims and actions on everything from taxes to jobs to health care. He did say that "sometimes I fault myself for not having been able to make the case more clearly to the country" that everyone with health insurance already spends about $1,000 of their premiums on care for the uninsured.

Part of the Democrats' health-care dilemma was apparent in Falls Church from the moment Obama began talking -- about the economy and all he had to do to end the freefall when he took office. "Obviously the economy has been uppermost on our minds, and I had to take a series of steps very quickly," he said. "There's a lot of anxiety and there's a lot of stress out there."

The president then pivoted to the necessity of dealing with "underlying chronic problems" such as soaring health costs and the inability of individuals to find coverage or pay for care. "We've just got to give people some basic peace of mind," he said, and dared Republicans to try to repeal a new law that not only offers that but also reduces the deficit by $1 trillion, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Repeal makes sense in terms of politics and polls, Obama said, but not if you are serious about reducing the deficit and "actually making people's lives better."

The White House posted a new feature called 50 States/50 Stories about how the health law is helping people across the country. Those who spoke Wednesday each embodied a benefit in the patient's bill of rights that takes effect Thursday. Host Paul Brayshaw said he has hemophilia and experienced "significant stress" after exhausting his lifetime insurance coverage limit in three years. He said his employer came through in the end to help him, but the new law -- which bans lifetime limits -- has removed the burdens and shackles he has lived with, and his dependence on his employer.

Dawn Josephson, of Jacksonville, Fla., said she couldn't believe it when an insurance agent told her that a new policy would cover any future problems with her young son, who had surgery for an eye problem and could need more operations. The agent said family policies could no longer exclude children with pre-existing conditions -- a provision that takes effect this week.

"It didn't hit me until later that night . . . as to why she said that," Josephson said. "I said 'Wow, something affected me personally from the government.' It was really shocking. Not only did we have a more affordable plan, but my son is now covered no matter what happens. ... I know now that that's not going to have to come out of our pocket , which was a big fear.."

Other people at the meeting included a medical student who can now stay on her parents' plan until she turns 26, a Medicare recipient who will receive more help paying for prescriptions, and a preschool teacher who was able to get coverage for cancer treatment from a high-risk insurance pool put in place by the new law. "You do not know how much this has changed my life," the teacher, Gail O'Brien of Keene, N.H., told Obama. Click play below to watch video:

Never before had I worried about healthcare. When my husband got laid off 4 months ago...we would have had to pay $600+ for our cobra but Obama made it so the Company paid for most of it so we only have to pay less than $200 for the same medical/dental. Also, with these new policies coming into effect, we won't have to pay anything (copays or anything) for mammograms or colonoscopys. Our children are grown now and have their own insurance. Although I never thought I would benefit from any of these services....I am glad they are there for me now. Thank you Obama.

Nancy-Ann Parle scored the comprehensive policy proposal. The reason her "in-house score" did not match the reality, as legislated by the Senate is because we are not allowing inter-state competition. Instead of taking something simple, the repeal of an Anti-Trust Exemption and adding in a permanent (or 5 year) doc fix which expires on 11/30/10, both democrats and republican are attempting to add extraneous material. While I personally agree with adding Tort Reform, from a timeliness perspective, it might drag it out another year, which is comprehensive bi-lateral dithering by many, many Senators.

Oh dear. I am not American and I don't live in the U.S. I am a Brit based in Latin America. You may all be disappointed with Obama but no one can defy gravity. He inherited a catastrophic situation and although everything has not miraculously come right overnight he has done a pretty good job with the terrible hand he was dealt. He probably won't survive for a 2nd turn but you guys will realize within 10 years or so how incredibly lucky you were to have him at this point in history. He is the best possible president at the worst possible time and he will burn for that. That's politics. The spavined and diluted health care bill that finally limped out of Washington, although pretty weak by European standards is a huge improvement on what you had before. It is an absolute tragedy that the citizizens of the most 'advanced' country of the early 21st century should have any doubts about helping the weakest members of society when they fall ill. What is this dog eat dog mentality? The only way we humans can evolve together is by helping each other. Get smart - forget the altruism. By helping the weakest you are helping yourself. Whay is that so difficult to understand?

Interesting how you "Brits" come to America for our lousy health care if yours is supposed to be so good!

I think we in the United states DO get it. We helped the weak in WWI and WWII. Otherwise I doubt very much you would be able to be enjoying the freedom of being in Latin America right now.

Their problem is not PR it is reality! I got my new premium bill, up 23% and lousy. Then they suddenly offer TriCare to retired reservists who could not get health insurance until age sixty. The premium is going up to $1,020.38 a month. What happened to reduced costs? You may be "giving" benefits to us but we cannot afford them. Are we going to then be penalized by the IRS. Reality sucks!

The amount that you pay for insurance depends on the plan thatyou choose and that has always been the standard. If you going for the way top is because they know that you can afford it. Tell that to people who don't knowning about insurance. You get what you pay for if you have included in their for you to collect money while you are in the hospital maybe that is the real reason your payment is so high.

Such wonderful stories about how the cost has gone down or was eliminated. Sorry people, you just can't get something for nothing! Someone has to pay for all of this! In the above story it says he will reduce the DEFICIT. That is the amount of money we spend as opposed to what we have. Spend more than you have=DEFICIT. He has no plan to reduce our DEBT. This only adds to the Nations DEBT.China already owns 1 TRILLION dollars of our debt!We owe them that much! They don't have to conquer us with tanks, they will just demand payment and they will get the DEED to this country in a BANKRUPTCY COURT! Get ready to learn Chinese!

Well guess what when people did not have insurance you were paying more then and your insurance was going up anyway. The majority of the people did not have insurance was people who worked and made enough money to get insurance but did. The reason for doing this is because their idea that the government will pay it or they just file bankruptcy and we still pay it. No this bill is not perfect but it is a start a startin getting people who can afford to get insurance to get it. That is a good thing.

Obama is history. He lost any credibility he had. He is now desperate. One by one his staff is jumping ship. Yet he still doesn't get it. Now he has recruited his wife to campagain for the democrats. Like she is more believable than he is. Instead of taking on the pharmacutical companies and insurance companies he chose to force health care on all americans at their expense.

Rarely have so many political strategists been so wrong about something so big. But when it comes to the health care bill, everyone from former President Bill Clinton on down whiffed on some of the more significant predictions. Democrats would run aggressively on the legislation? Nope. Voters would forget about the sausage-making aspects of the legislative process? Doesn’t seem that way, as the process contributed to the sense that the bill was deeply flawed. And Clinton’s own promise to jittery Democrats that their poll numbers would skyrocket after the bill finally passed also didn’t pan out, as the party is fighting for its life in the midterms. “I’m telling you, I don’t care how low they drive support for this with misinformation. The minute the president signs the health care reform bill, approval will go up, because Americans are inherently optimistic.” — Bill Clinton at the Netroots Nation convention in August 2009. We tried to tell ya...TRIED TO TELL YA....Now even Politico takes a notice...some just wont learn,Right,Jill?

who is paying for all this? your kid may get coverage but who is paying? maybe he and his grand kids in the future. We need a big dose of personal responsibility rather than looking for neighbors to pay our bills for us.

People need to realize that without health care reform, more and more people will die. The GOP wants to stop the health care reform bill because their backers, the insurance companies, want it stopped. The main reason the Tea Baggers are out in force was because of the health care reform agenda in the first place. The problem with the GOP and the Tea Baggers is that the same ones are backing them both....the insurance industry. They have fought the health agenda from the start and will do anything to stop it....even take health care away from the children(as their recent plans demonstrate).

Nothing in the sleazy health care reform addressed costs. Unless we can create real competition by buying across state lines, tort reform and get rid of the pork in the bill, God help us all!

News flash James - everyone is going to die! No matter what you do we are all going to be dust eventually. I'm working middle class, should I be expected to shoulder the costs for those who want to live in a Nanny State? I thought Obama was all about HELPING the middle class? Seems to me he is doing his best to destroy us, leaving only those who suck at the Government teat and those with big bucks, that he wants control of. My deductible when from $1,500 (which is unbelievable) to $3,000 (astounding!) tell me where I am being helped. My family actually works, so we have this silly thing called 'shame' when it comes to living off the government till. Guess we should all just quit our jobs, lay back and let nature take its course huh? Last time I did that I had a baby nine months later. No thanks!

Mr. President instead of visiting a wealthy VA suburb why not travel over to Ward 8 in the District. There are people who need help more than any other people around. Oh, I forgot they are so poor there are no businesses there, or reataurants, etc.
