John Boehner: Rangel, Waters Should Face Ethics Trials Before Election

House Republican leader John Boehner joined the five GOP members of the House Ethics Committee Wednesday in urging that the ethics trials of two senior Democrats be held before the November election. He said Reps. Charlie Rangel (N.Y.) and Maxine Waters (Calif.) "deserve a chance to clear their names."

Both Rangel and Waters have been formally charged by the committee for multiple violations of House rules, but have not had trials scheduled to respond to those charges.

"If I recall, both Mr. Rangel and Mrs. Waters asked the Ethics Committee for a speedy trial so that they could clear their names," Boehner said. "And I think the fact that the five Republican members of the Ethics Committee have had to resort to sending a letter to the chairman indicates that all is not well."

On Tuesday, the committee co-chairman, Rep. Joe Bonner of Alabama, joined his four fellow committee Republicans in sending a scathing letter to the committee's chairwoman, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), accusing her of deliberately delaying the trials until after the elections, when any political fall-out for House Democrats could be minimized.

"It is in the best interest of transparency and fairness . . . that the House Ethics Committee stop stalling and complete these trials before the November election," Bonner and the committee members wrote.

Bonner's letter came as a shock to Democrats, since House rules specifically prevent any member of the committee from speaking about ethics matters without first consulting the members of the other party on the committee. Bonner sent his letter to Lofgren and released a copy to the media while Lofgren was on a flight and unable to respond to it.

But Boehner defended the letter as appropriate and said, "These members have asked for a speedy trial so that they can clear their names and why it's not happening is beyond me."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Throw Waters and Rangel out. There is no "clearing of names". How can you clear your name when you are guiltry as sin? Just more business as usual from the ethically challenged Democrat Party.

This man was on the tax committee and he didn't know that the income from his villa was taxable and reportable. He was a thief and now that he is caught, he thinks the American people are stupid. All politicans of either party should be held accountable to us, the people.

Just curious. I have been looking for my Rep for the 8th District of Ohio for a long time. See him on TV, but never in our district. In case anyone happens to see a orange tan man campaigning for GOP candidates, send him back to the people of Ohio, as he is suppose to represent them and he hasn't in a long time.

alexisyf09, What do the long term highest unemployed, least educated, poverty ridden cities and areas of the United States all have in common? They have all been under long term control of the democrat party. Perfect example are New Orleans, Michigan and Washington D. C.. The U. S. unemployment rate was 4.7% when the democrats took control of congress in the last two years of the Bush Presidency. What have the democrats done? Pelosi promised to drain the swamp and since then the democrat party has obstructed justice, as the ethics committee is doing now, and made UNFULFILLED promises to the under educated, under employed minorities of America. When will some of you use your computer to determine facts instead of a means to complain about your lot in life. FACTUAL EDUCATION IS THE PATH TO FREEDOM, SUCCESS

The ethics committee will not try them now. First, Dems don't want to bring attention to ethics problems in their party just before the election. Second, if the accused lose their re-election bids the trials are unnecessary. Third, if re-elected it proves the people in their districts don't care about ethics so the trials are unnecessary.

He sure has Rangel and Waters best interest...... What a JOKE. All Rep are a joke. They only have the best interest of the rich people. Thinking about it, why don't they want to vote on the tax cuts now? That's because in that vote, you (the working class) will get the cuts, and the rich wont. But, if they hold off until after the election, hoping that they win the house and or the senate they can vote on it with the cuts for the rich as well as you (working class) or not vote at all and have the cuts expire and your taxes either go up or they stay the same.

Rangal's and arrogant jerk and a crook and yet the people are stupid and voted for him knowing he belongs in prison. New York deserves what it gets. I hope he's found guilty, because he is and has to step down in embrassment. Boehner is actually doing the dems a favor by pushing for the hearing because election, because thay would give the democrats time to replace Rangal on the ballot.

John Boehner is the very last person to be throwing political stones. This guy has been in Congress since 1990. He offers no solutions to our current problems and only looks for someone to blame. My mother always taught me to first look within myself for change before I expect others to do so. Mr. Boehner has voted himself a raise at least 8 times in the past 20 years. His District in SW Ohio is one of the hardest hit with this economic nightmare and he has done little to nothing to revitalize the people who directly elected him. He sits back and collects his fat pay checks and he and his family enjoy 100% free Health Care for LIFE. He has no idea what the common American struggles with on a day to day basis. All he is interested in is power: who has it, why he doesn't have it, and who he has to lie to in order to get it! His "Pledge to America" is the same regergitated slop that the failed "Contract to America" was in the 90's.
