The president will bid farewell to Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel on Friday, Oct. 1. Emanuel is poised to run for mayor of Chicago. In what may be the worst kept secret in Washington, the White House is expected to name Senior Adviser Pete Rouse to fill Emanuel's shoes in the interim until a permanent chief of staff is named. Here's what's on tap:

10:00 a.m. -- The president receives the presidential daily briefing in the Oval Office.

11:05 a.m. -- Makes a "personnel announcement" in the East Room. (No word on whether there will be "Rahm for Mayor" buttons on sale outside the West Wing.)

11:30 a.m. -- Meets with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Oval Office.

12:15 p.m. -- Briefing by Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

2:00 p.m. -- Attends Justice Elena Kagan's investiture ceremony at the Supreme Court.

3:20 p.m. -- Receives the economic daily briefing in the Oval Office.

4:00 p.m. -- Meets with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in the Oval Office.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
