Carl Paladino Says Threat Wasn't Real, Denies Claiming Cuomo Had Affairs

Carl Paladino backtracked Thursday after being caught on tape threatening a reporter, saying he didn't mean it literally when he told Fred Dicker of the New York Post, "I'll take you out." And the Republican candidate for governor of New York also said he isn't accusing his opponent, Andrew Cuomo, of having had an extramarital affair.

The commotion stems from a confrontation Wednesday in which Paladino accused Dicker and the Post of harassing the 10-year-old daughter he fathered during an extramarital affair with a former employee 10 years ago. Paladino has been angry over press inquiries about the girl, and has intimated, without providing evidence, that Cuomo had affairs of his own and that the media have not investigated.

"I want to know why you sent your goons after my daughter, Fred. You send another goon to my daughter's house and I'll take you out, buddy!" Paladino says in the grainy, ill-lit video, recorded on a bystander's cellphone.

Earlier this week, Paladino was quoted by Politico as saying: "Has anybody asked Andrew Cuomo about his paramours? When he was married -- or asked him why his wife left him or threw him out of the house? Has anybody ever done that? What are they doing intruding on my life?"

Cuomo and Kerry Kennedy were married in 1990. They separated in 2003 and divorced in 2005.

The Buffalo News reports that Paladino now says he wasn't threatening Dicker. The term "taking out," he explained, is part of his campaign slogan, as in he's "taking out the governor . . . taking out the trash."

Paladino also said he is not accusing Cuomo of having had an extramarital affair. He said that he has been subjected to so many questions about his personal life that he wonders whether the media is posing the same questions to Cuomo.

"I'm sick and tired of people asking me if I've had affairs," Paladino said. "I was talking to [a reporter with Politico.com] and said, 'Why don't you ask Andrew Cuomo if he has had extramarital affairs. It's not that I was accusing him."

The Cuomo campaign declined to comment on the matter.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Mr. Paladino, If things don't work out for you in New York. Move to Miami, we need you here.

How about this as a long term plan to avoid unexpected consequences....ones that a man cannot imagine 10 or 20 or even 50 years down the line: Don't have extramarital affairs. Period. If you're unhappy in your marriage, then do things in the proper order: First you get divorced, and then you seek out new companionship....and especially before you make new children. Ripple effects are real. Mr. paladino is simply reaping the consequences....with 10 years or more lag time....of that which he set in motion by having an extramarital affair. If Mr. paladino has children from the marriage which he breached 10 years or so ago, I wonder how they feel about their father....deep down....if they were independently wealthy and didn't need his money and/or connections to further themselves. This world would be much better if a) there would be severe consequences for lying and b) people would do things in the right order.

Mr. Paladino is right, the media should ask the same questions to Cuomo as the ask of him. And the media should uphold the right to privacy of Mr. Paladino's 10 year old daughter. Shame on the media for sending people to film the little girl. This whole episode was so obvious as a set up to agitate Mr. Paladino. Paladino is a refreshing change to the status quo politicians we are handed on a silver platter from the establishment parties in power! Mr Cuomo is just another progressive liberal who will not bring in new change to New York. He would be just more of the same garbage we deal with now! Carl Paladino is open and honest in his approach to bringing change to Albany. Yes, he is rough around the edges, but who cares, he sounds like a guy who will really shake things up! He's got my vote! Go Paladino Go!

I am a citizen of New York and lean slightly right of center on my beliefs, so this is not a comment from a left Democrat; this guy Paladino is psychotic. If he gets elected, which would be an embarassment to this state (if we can be any more embarrased), this state will be in eternal chaos and gridlock worst than it is now.

This guy is a loose cannon. Not crazy about Cuomo, but is is clear this guy is unqualified to run a state. Threatening a reporter? Come on! I could care less about him having a child out of wedlock, but I'm also tired of Republicans hiding behind "family values" bullcrap and taking the moral high ground, acting like they are better than everyone else.

NO! Paladino DOES NOT have the right to say it! If he does then WE have the right to say it, but WE don't! He's not any better than anyone else in this country! He's just a thug for doing that! Our country deserves better than this!

This is the kind of people the tea party backs? What is going on here? Clinton is chastised for his affair with an intern, but Paladino has a child by another woman besides his wife and this is OK? Then he threatens a reporter, claims to know some dirt on Cuomo, and then later denies it, even though it's right there on video, in front of America to see? The tea party is behind people like this? I thought we were looking for honesty and integrity here? O'Donnell has serious issues! So does Angle, Paul, Whitman, and a few others! Obama takes the heat every day from open media but yet Palin runs Obama down and then runs and hides behind Foxtrash? What happened to our politicians being able to stand and deliver through the good and the bad?

Nice unbiased article. Caught on tape? Hardly. He said what he said without caring whether he was being taped, although I'm sure he knew it was being recorded. Someone obviously was holding up a recording device; hard to miss. Maybe it was a setup- you think??? This is not new for Carl, this is how he operates- whether you like him or not. Pretty unrelenting bias in your articles, Tom Kavanagh. Is this supposed to be a news piece or an opinion piece?

With all this guy's proclaimed 'common sense', why did he did not have protection installed for his daughter? Surely he must have foreseen problems such as this, in light of his oft-explosive and egotistical braying.
