Elena Kagan's Supreme Court Investiture Set for Today

Elena Kagan was quietly sworn in nearly two months ago as the 112th justice of the Supreme Court, but there will be pomp and circumstance today when a formal investiture ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. The ceremony is a formal affair, CNN reports, where the authority of the office is conferred.

The Senate confirmed Kagan, 63-37, Aug. 5 on a mostly party-line vote.

Among the cases she will confront in her first term will be disputes over noisy protests at military funerals, state bans on violent video games and the death penalty.

Kagan, 50, the former dean of Harvard Law School, pledged to "do equal right to the poor and to the rich" as she took the second of two required oaths in August from Chief Justice John Roberts.

She joins a court that often splits in favor of a 5-4 conservative majority. She is expected to be a reliable liberal vote similar to John Paul Stevens, whom she replaced on the bench. Kagan is the fourth woman confirmed to the court, and joins current female justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

what is wrong with our country...where is the common sense...these poor people who have lost a loved one who was serving in our military and they have to put up with those wackos. I am sorry...this goes far beyond freedom of speech...I totally disagree with disrepect of our flag and our wonderful military men and women who serve to protect our country.
