Joe Miller, Alaska Senate Candidate, Wants to End Federal Minimum Wage Law

Joe Miller, the Republican candidate for Senate in Alaska, has repeatedly said he wants to shrink the federal government, and in an interview with ABC News he makes clear how far he's willing to go, calling for an end to the federal minimum wage law.

Miller argued that that the 1938 law codifying a minimum wage "is not within the scope of the powers that are given to the federal government."

Setting such a wage is "clearly up to the states," said Miller, a Tea Party favorite in the midterm election. "The state of Alaska has a minimum wage which is higher than the federal level because our state leaders have made that determination. The minimum level again should be the state's decision."

Miller told ABC he stands by his previous statement that federal unemployment insurance is also not authorized by the Constitution, saying states should decide whether or not to provide jobless benefits. He said all federal regulations that don't relate to interstate commerce should be done at the state level.

"It still makes far more sense to have those kinds of decisions made at the level closest to the people, where there is more accountability, less inefficiency, where there is more understanding of where the people ought to be and what the state role of government is," Miller said. "If you like big government, move to Massachusetts."

Miller handed Sen. Lisa Murkowski a stunning defeat in the GOP primary. She is now staging a write-in campaign. Polls show the two Republicans running about even, with Democrat Scott McAdams trailing by double digits.

The increases in the minumu wage should be attached to the inflation rate. Raising Minumum wage 2 dollars over 3 years decreases income for many small businesses. To compensate they either lay off or raise prices.

Sounds like Miller thinks Federal minimum wage is too low , and that the Federal Government should step aside ans let the individual States decide on minimum wage. I agree on both counts.

"Mikey10:59 PM Oct 4, 2010(1) vote this comment up (3)Renia, twenty cents a day in those countries is a LOT of money. People are GLAD to have those jobs; they WANT those jobs. They would be making a lot less without those jobs. They do not have the same cost of living as we do, so using American cost of living standards to say what other people should be paid is ridiculous. Mjoycemed1 is right that minimum wage is a problem, but it's more a problem of making sure the poor will only ever make a certain amount and cannot ask for more because the law makes sure businesses all pay the same and so don't have to be competitive to draw in employees. Even if there was no minimum wage here, it would still be cheaper to move jobs oversees, because if there was no minimum wage the laborers in America would still insist on more for their labor by way of shopping around for the employer with the most competitive wages (which we don't have now because everyone sticks with minimum wage)." so you are trying to say that minimum wage should be decided by the market, especially in a recession? That American workers should adjust their expectations downward to those of Bangladeshi workers? please expound.

In Utah and Arizona, The Minimum wage is way to high. The People actually think they are worth $27.00 an hour. The People I paid $12.50 an hour was not capible of taking instruction. No incentive to work or do a good job. By Noon, they were ready to be paid, I went out and only half of what the job was is done.

Please allow me to introduce Joe Miller. nut case, avoider of military service, changer of stance, depending on what is preceived as popular, full of impractical crackpot ideas, sayer of anything, with out morals, without ethics. Fellow voters. Do you think that it is the lack of sunlight, or the cold in Alaska, that causes that state to spawn as many nutty and crooked politicians as it does crab legs?

Let's put Joe Miller on minimum wage, take away his healthcare and social security benefits as well. He should be running for crew chief at McDonald's not for senator of Alaska. That's compassionate conservatism in action.

This guy is typical of the fanatics the Republicans are touting. Maybe people should study the labor movement. At the turn of the last century companys typically required their employees to work 12 to 16 hours a day, seven days a week. Only the rich owned homes, everyone else rented from the company so you obeyed ,or you were homeless. Most companýs barely paid a living wage, no healthcare, no retirement, no vacations and no rights. It was Ford that had people gunned down on the streets of Detroit for trying to organize for better conditions. Fast forward to the turn of this century and what do you find? both partners having to work just to pay the bills, one of them might even hold two jobs. Companys cutting healthcare, cutting retirment contributions, cutting wages. All so the company has a better bottom line, and the people at the top make bigger bonuses. Since Reaganomics started the standard of living for the working class has gradually gone in the dumpster. In the last 30 years 85% of all pay increases have gone to the top 3% of the taxpayers. We had better get out the vote or we'll be nothing but slaves to these plutocrates. 20 years ago an employer told me "ain"t no white man worth more $7.00 an hour". I put forth the idea that "ain't no W.A.S.P. worth more than 1 million a year".

The federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages. To allow each state to determine the minimum wage, unchecked by the federal minimum wage, would likely start a freefall of minimum wages. This leads to more poverty, to less things being purchased. This leads to more imports. This leads to fewer jobs. This leads to more welfare. This leads to more crime. This leads to more incarcerations...etc.

At first, when I read this article, I was aghast at what Joe had to say. Ending the minimum wage would be horrible for America's workers, and this Joe guy is obviously an idiot to think that it would help anyone but the rich. But then I started reading the comments and I found out that those opposed to his idea outnumber those who like it by about 15 to 1. This tells me that we, the people who are going to the polls in a month, are rallying against boneheads like this guy. In a roundabout way, he's helping out the Democrats- the very people he wants to defeat! God bless you, Joe Miller! I can't wait to hear more loony-tunes rhetoric from you and the other right wing crazies!

what it tells me is that 99.4% of the people are not intelligent enough to understand the concept. Please explain how minimum wage is good for the american worker? First lets define who minimum wage work is. The average joe working a minimum wage job is 20.9 years old, works on average 25 hours a week. Most of them are living with mom, mom and dad or just dad and are working for spending money. The largest section of unemployed are teenagers. They dont pay any income tax because of allowances and exceptions. How is raisng the minimum wage bad for American workers. Lets see it creates higher unemployment (historical fact), increases the cost of goods(historical fact). Labor unions base their contracts on average 5 times the minimum wage. So that job that was 22 bucks a hour while now be 36.25 a hour.
