John Conyers' Bad Bounce: Driver's License Suspended This Summer

It's not quite on the level of "the dog ate my homework," but Rep. John Conyers had a ready -- if embarrassing -- explanation for having his driver's license suspended this summer.

It seems his renewal check bounced.

The license was suspended from June 30 until July 26 after Conyers paid the fee with a check that was not covered by sufficient funds, the Associated Press reports.

"A check was inadvertently written to renew the chairman's driver's license from an account that had been recently closed," a statement issued by the Michigan congressman's office explained. "As a result his driver's license was suspended. Immediately upon learning of this, a replacement cashier's check was provided, and his driver's license was immediately reinstated."

The AP discovered the lapse after inquiring about the driving histories of all major-party candidates in Michigan.

Conyers, 81, is currently the second-longest-serving incumbent in the House. The Democrat is seeking reelection to a 24th term next month.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Interesting. Were any other checks written on the closed account? Who is responsible for closing the account and who wrote the check? I assume it was "staff", and it should have happened on more than 1 check.

Come on Michigan, wake up. An 81 year old in Congress??? If the man doesn't know how and when to retire, let the good voters of Michigan do him a favor and do it for him.

Rep. Conyers, I feel your pain and there's no shame admitting to having extreme financial difficulties like most of America (including this writer!) is going thru. My ability to register a car was suspended for about 6 months due to my inability to afffornd the insurance, as well as my car being towed in the process for outstanding parking tickets that I knew nothing about. Keep the faith and good luck with your re-election bid. Keep fighting fo the under-served! ;)

But, the article states, "A check was inadvertently written to renew the chairman's driver's license from an account that had been recently closed," a statement issued by the Michigan congressman's office explained. " It didn't say Conyer's was having financial difficulties.
