Republican incumbent Rick Perry has opened a 50 percent to 36 percent lead over Democrat Bill White in the Texas governor's race, putting a little further out of reach a prize Democrats thought they might be able to snatch in this conservative state, according to a poll by Public Strategies conducted Sept. 26-Oct. 2 for Belo television stations.

Nine percent of voters are undecided and the margin of error is 3.7 points.

Unlike many other states, 52 percent of voters believe Texas is headed in the right direction -- something that helps Perry despite Democrats' hopes that a budget gap and other economic pressures would undercut Perry's arguments that he has done a good job of guiding the state through the recession.
Rick Perry, Bill WhitePerry is seen favorably by 56 percent of voters while 46 percent give White, the former mayor of Houston, a favorable rating.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Wow, they called only 1000 likely voters in Texas, and came up with these results? Everybody I talk to is voting for Bill White. I guess they didn't call any of us! The Dallas Morning News is supporting Bill White. Who would have thought that.

I am for Rick Perry. I live in Houston. My water bill is over $200 a month thanks to Bill White!!!! He would be following Mr. Obama around. Rick tried to talk to Mr. Obama when he came to Texas to get something done on our border. Bill White has an ad putting him down for the border and the president was too busy getting money to talk to him. I think that is really dirty on Bill White's part!!!

Rick Perry replaced George W. Bush as Governor ten years ago and will probably serve another ten years.
